10.0 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie

Like its predecessors such as "The Transformers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Power Rangers was successful enough in its first year on the air to warrant the investors to pool the necessary $50 million dollars to produce Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. Unfortunately, the movie has currently (as of this summer) garnered only 35 million dollars out of the $125,000,000 it was suppose to make.

The following is a short plot summary. If you do not wish to continue, please skip to section 10.1. A full storyline is available in section 10.2.

Zedd and Rita search 6,000 years for an egg which Zedd unhatches. Ivan Ooze is unearthed and he agrees to help Zedd and Rita destroy Zordon and the Power Rangers.

The rangers meet up with this foe and fight his Ooze-filled clones. During their battle, Ooze breaks into the command center and trashes it, causing the rangers to lose their powers. To save the city, their powers and Zordon's life, the rangers must travel to a distant planet to take on the power of the Ninjetti and the AnimalZords, which they eventually get.

Ooze uses his evil ooze to put a spell over the town's parents to help him build ectomorphicons to destroy the city and the world. To find out how the rangers save the day, and how double-crossed Rita and Zedd get out of the snowball, see the movie or see section 10.2.

10.1 Production History and Development

Shortly after the success of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it was forwarded by Saban Entertainment to the Fox Kids Network that it may be appropriate to consider the production of a movie. Shortly afterwards, the investors were found and things went into action. Right from the start, the logical choice was to use the actors from the television series. The probably never-to-be-confirmed rumor is that because Austin St. John, Walter Jones and Thuy Trang weren't getting paid enough for what they were to endure in the process of creating the movie, the case was quickly (but wasn't quickly enough) converted.

The more preferable definition of what occured was that the actors decided to get into another area of acting which will be seen in 1995.

It was imperative that the movie be finished soon enough to generate enough sales while the concept of "Power Rangers" was still trendy, however, there was the constant concern that the movie should distance itself from the much ridiculed sentai japanese scenes that the producers had relied upon so much for its success.

A few months later, it became apparent to Saban that they had the even more difficult task of finishing in time. It was impossible to find the space for the production in America, so they began looking internationally. It was then announced that the production would take place in Australia, and, accordingly, an Australian division of the American production was established there.

There was the difficulty that the Gold Coast "Movie World" facility was overbooked. Regardless, the producer, Suzanne Todd ("Die Hard II," "Lethal Weapon II" and "Predator") had chosen Sydney, NSW would be Angel Grove.

The resulting production would then be spread over two nations; a very expensive and undesirable situation. About this time, a number of motion-picture executives in Sydney had already been approached by Twentieth Century Fox as to the possibility of producing the movie, which they had knocked back three times due to other productions. However, the situation looked up as these other productions were canceled, leaving an open spot in Sydney and the stage was set for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to be produced.

At this point, all that was needed was a venue for sets to be constructed, and this was arranged at an 11th hour meeting between two NSW senators. Mr. Collins (Arts Minister) requested that Mrs. Collins (Education) request that her department relocate her H.S.C. (School Exam) out of two large pavilions in the nearby R.A.S. showgrounds to enable them to be hired by the now established Tengu Productions to produce "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers."

To everyone's surprise, the plan actually worked. And as such, a construction team was assembled and work began on September 15th, 1994 to build Zedd's Palace and the Command Center in the Commemorative Pavilion.

A little while afterwards, the situation was complicated by a sudden announcement by Rupert Murdoch (Australian millionaire who owns a significant stake in the Fox Film Corporation and therefore indirectly influences Power Rangers and finances the movie).

He had stated that they were interested in acquiring the entire showground site (only second in size to Universal Studios) for conversion to a movie studio - unaware that his own company was already producing a major feature at the site. The announcement caught the state government by surprise, as well, and as such a tendering process was commenced for which Fox Film was to be one of many invited to get the site.

July 20th, it was announced that the Sydney Showgrounds will indeed become a massive movie studio, fully operational by 1998 which means the chance of a sequel to the Power Rangers movie being filmed in Sydney is now more likely than ever as current estimates put the possibility at 95% and a chance of it being produced in Sydney at around 70%. The latter depending mostly on the continued relationship between Saban Entertainment and the Fox Corporation.

Meanwhile, Tengu Productions (consisting now of just about everyone who was anyone in the Sydney film production industry) also had their eyes on the site, but not as a part of the 20th Century Fox-Film Corporation.

Meanwhile on October 31st, 1994, the shooting began with the first of many "City Streets" in the center of Sydney, the first scene involving extras running from "The Hornitor" and being endangered by an out of control car. The following Wednesday, the American cast arrived in Sydney as well a number of stunt-people who previously were putties and Stunt-Double Rangers in the television series.

Production ensued and so did the construction of sets at the Showground, including: Zedd's Palace, The Command Center, Four Zord Cockpits (two of which were repainted to be the other two), also to form the six ultimate zords, the MegaZord Cockpit. As well as Centerpoint Tower and the Rope Bridge.

By mid November, further "City Streets" shootings had commenced using the original actors in their uniforms. Soon after, it became apparent that a number of "Changes" to the script and screenplay were "desirable" and that there were more sets required due to an inability to find suitable locations. These included the Chemical Plant and a jungle scene. So, work commenced.

Despite all efforts, it was clear by Christmas that the production would go well overtime, as there were many additional scenes and reshoots being commissioned by the Saban and 20th Century Fox and a few more days were lost to unshootable weather conditions.

The actors and actresses were appeased by bringing their families over from America for Christmas, and they enjoyed a few shorts days of relaxation on a Queensland island in early January. By this time, capacity at Movie World had finally become available and a set was commissioned there, splitting the production.

Meanwhile, Tengu Productions were close to the expiration date of the lease on the showground buildings in Sydney. This was sorted out, however, in any case, they had to vacate the site by March when the R.A.S. would stage the "Royal Easter Show" there. The three original sets were demolished and materials reused to create a new set, still unfinished, meanwhile shooting had commenced on the zords.

During production, several acteresses played the role of Dulcea including Mariska Hargitay (the daughter of Jane Mansfield).

The Production Team

The production team consists mainly of Australian Crew with American people imported where required. For example, the creature shop is U.S. based, while the Art Department is all Australian except for a few of the art designers. The crew is almost exclusively Australian.

The cast is a mix of American and Australian actors. Where American actors hold key roles, an Australian actor is provided as standby to make sure the unions do not make problems. Which is still cheaper than the U.S. equivalent. In actual fact, this stand-by actors became "lighting stand in's" who take the Ranger's place when framing and lighting advance scenes on location shots were taken. All extras are Australian, as are the villain's actors, however, the voices would be dubbed in an A.D.R. recording studio in America.

The stunt actor for White Ranger is Hein Nguyen with his lighting stand In Miro Amirzog. The stunt actor for Red Ranger is Stuart Quan with his lighting standing Patrick Noble. The stunt actor for Black Ranger is Danny Stallcup with Peter Buckingham as his lighting stand in. Blue Ranger's stunt double is David Wald with Chris Drake as his lighting stand in. Pink Ranger's stunt actor is Sophia Crawford with Ollie Symons as her lighting stand in and Yellow Ranger's stunt double was Bridget Riley (a long-time putty) with the lighting stand-in as Vicki O'Hart.

The stunt acting team is also a mix of Australia's best along with a number of the best putties from the television series. Although, initially, the original actors carried out some shoots in costume, this is not the case with all morphing activity being done by the stunt doubles.

Post Production consists of an offline editing suite at the Sydney office where most of the decisions are made. These are all recorded digitally and can be transferred to America where online editing takes place. All scenes and frames are fully time-coded with audio post production cut in America at Saban Studios.

The latter facility was also utilized for a number of television series shots done in Sydney, and in some cases, the Art Department has furnished items for the third season of Power Rangers, although, the production team itself and the television shooting units are of Saban Entertainment and Movie Magic and based in Valencia, California in America.

A large number of locations have been utilized in Sydney, including Darling Harbour, World Square Construction Site, Chinese Gardens, and of course the city streets themselves as well as various parks including Centennial Park and Bankstown Airport. Locations have also been shot in Queensland as well as Kiama on the NSW south coast.

To take advantage of a compromising predicament, television crews created a few episodes such as "The Wedding" and "Return of the Green Ranger" were filmed when the movie production was just about concluded.

On December 23rd, 1994, a Christmas part for the cast and crew was held at which the original author of this document, Paul Matthews (Visual Arts) was invited to and had unfortunately missed.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie was released in most theaters Friday, June 30th, 1995 Friday; the Home Video will be released Tuesday, November 21st, 1995. Have a great time, folks. :)

10.2 Plot Summary [Spoiler]

The six teenagers participate in a skydive show that benefits the observatory to see Ryan's comet. After the show, Tommy's fan, Fred, talks over skydiving with Tommy and his friends. Meanwhile, at a construction site, a crew is digging in the earth when they come upon something in which they pull up to be a gigantic egg with a claw over it. Upon the electrocution of a curious construction worker, workers left and the site was guarded day--and night.

Lord Zedd and Rita get wind of this new development and take Goldar and his pig relative from out of town, Mordant, on a mission to open its contents. Zedd hatches the giant purple egg and releases the new villain: Ivan Ooze; a being captured 6,000 years ago. Ooze agrees to help Zedd and Rita defeat Zordon and the Power Rangers.

Zordon informs the roller-blading rangers of the new developments and asks them to seek out this egg and ensure its contents aren't opened. However, when the rangers return to the site, it's not there. The rangers are approached by Ooze disguised as a guard and they go through an introductory dialogue before Ivan Ooze presents the rangers with his ooze-filled clones.

During a fight with Ivan Ooze clones, Ivan Ooze "oozes" into the Command Center's newly installed doors and conclusively destroys the Command Center, overloads the Morphing Grid and sends Zordon on his way to D.O.A.

This process causes the Power Rangers to lose their powers, conveniently after the fight ends. They retreat to what is left of the Command Center and discover what had happened.

Alpha (6?) informs the rangers that Zordon's only hope is that they travel to a planet called Phaedos and attempt to learn the art of Ninjetti, but it seems according to Alpha that no one has survived the journey. Thus, the heroic teens agree to travel to Phadeos and they are teleported to the planet. Lord Zedd and Rita discover this and ask Ooze to do something about this.

So, to give the rangers on Phaedos something to do, Ooze sends out the Tengu warriors (reminiscent of the flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz") to terrorize the rangers.

A warrior woman in a green bikini named Dulcea (originally dressed in a robe) fights them and sends them back and after a rather short defiance to help them, Dulcea decides to assist the rangers after they tell them about Zordon, Ivan Ooze and how their world is doomed.

The Tengu Warriors return to earth with the bad news and end up annihilated by Ivan Ooze. When Ooze doesn't seem to be the perfect warrior he said he was, Zedd becomes very angry after Ooze double-crosses him and names himself the new leader. Zedd tries to destroy him, but is unsuccessful. Ivan retaliates and locks Lord Zedd and Rita in a snowball and begins his plans to take over the world by putting all the parents on earth under a spell with his Ooze to be given to them by children. Goldar, pointing out the obvious, notes his hideous exterior and, therefore, Ooze disguises himself as someone more cheerful (?) to get the kids to take the free gunk.

Meanwhile, Dulcea shows the rangers the art of Ninjetti and they're put in fancy ninja outfits. Tommy takes on the powers of the Falcon, Rocky becomes the Ape, Adam takes on the Ninjetti art of the Frog (Editors Note: There wasn't anything special in that line), Billy is the Ninja Wolf, Kimberly became the Crane and Aisha is the Bear.

Meanwhile, the Parents are brainwashed and Ivan Ooze commands them to unearth his ancient ectomorphicons (giant, silver monster robots) Hornitor and Scorpitron.

The rangers end up earning their new powers by fighting the most powerful humanoid monsters ever seen by the teens and regain their power suits and return to Earth.

The ectomorphicons terrorize the city and begin a mad rampage while Ivan Ooze, who now has no use for the town's parents, commands them to walk off a cliff in which Fred tries to rally the other kids (whom are partying off of their parents' unexplained absence) to keep them from killing themselves while he comes up with a plan. The kids, and Bulk and Skull make way for a monorail with a missing track thanks to one of the ectomorphicons.

The rangers finally return to Earth and see the all but totally destroyed downtown Angel Grove. They call on their new NinjaZords and end up destroying Hornitor but aren't quite too lucky at polishing off the Scorpitron so, they form the pretty awesome looking NinjaMegaZord.

Meanwhile, Tommy's FalconZord keeps the monorail carrying the kids from crashing. The kids finally arrive where the cliff is. The kids push forward their parents to keep them from walking off the cliff when Fred finally returns with a crane (?) and turns a hose with cold water on the parents, knocking the spell off.

Ivan Ooze becomes mad that the rangers are finally getting the upper hand over Scorpitron and he merges himself with Scorpitron and turns into an Ectomorphic Ivan Ooze and fights the MegaZord. Sooner than you'd expect, Ooze destroy the Power Sword and are just about threw themselves when the FalconZord infuses itself with the MegaZord to become the Ultra Ninja MegaZord. They fly into outer-space (thanks to Billy's only ingenious idea) and use Ryan's comet to destroy Ivan Ooze.

Rita and Zedd are finally freed of the snowball and things are set back to normal, except the rangers' new power and zords.

To wrap things up, the rangers have a big feast as Tommy commemorates Fred for saving the parents and encourages that he could become a Power Ranger. Finally, the teens and the whole city watches a fireworks display in which the city pays their thanks to the Power Rangers.
