Besides its live-action shows, Saban also has five-animated TV shows on the air in Los Angeles, including Creepy Crawlers, Space Strikers, X-Men, Tenko and the Guardians of the Magic and Teknoman. All these shows, with the exception of Teknoman, use non-union voiceover artists. Teknoman, it turns out, is signed to SAG's foreign dubbing contract, a low-budget pact designed to provide union jobs for American voiceover artists who dub cartoons from Japan and other foreign countries into English. This pact calls for union voiceover artists to receive no less than $50 per hour for a two-hour minimum call, and $45 for each additional hour, with contributions to SAG's pension and health plan. Teknoman is a new Saban show, but technically, Saban is not its producer. The official producer of Teknoman--the company that signed SAG's foreign dubbing contract--is an outfit called Interprod, Inc. Saban and Interprod, however, appear to be one and the same company--indeed, SAG's signatory records show that Saban and Interprod have the same address and telephone number. Saban's switchboard operators, however, say they've never heard of Interprod. A Saban official who was unfamiliar with Interprod said that "it's probably just part of Saban." Saban, however, is not the only producer in town using non-union actors. Grab Prods. Inc., and Tradewinds Entertainment are producing a reality-based show called U.S. Customs: Classified, currently taping its segments (which is AFTRA's jurisdiction) using non-union actors. The show's host, Stephen J. Cannel, and the actors used in the show's recreations of actual events are all working without benefit of a union contract. A SAG and AFTRA union member himself, Cannell recently went on financial core status with AFTRA so that he can appear on the show. Ed Horwitz, the show's co-executive producer, said, "Our actors are non-union. We are producing the show on a shoestring budget, and couldn't possibly afford union rates at this time." Pamm Fair, a spokesperson for AFTRA in Los Angeles, said, "We have spoken with the company regarding the show in the hope that it can become a union project." Most other reality-based shows that use actors in recreations--such as America's Most Wanted or Unsolved Mysteries--are signatory to SAG or AFTRA contracts. Another exception is Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, which uses non-union actors in its reenactments, and whose host, California Highway Patrol Commissioner Maury Hannigan, is not covered by a union contract. Real Stories, now in is fourth season, is produced by Leap Off Prods. in association with Mark Massari Prods., and, like U.S. Customs, is distributed by Genesis Entertainment, a division of New World Entertainment. ************************************************************************** **** POWER RANGERS PROFILE #6 The box of magic chose Tommy, the White Ranger. * * * * * * * * * * * SERIES ONE (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers symbol) "Power Rangers Profile" Collect 'Em! Power Rangers ZEO (Sat., Fox, 9 A.M./ET) Remember the Christmas season you were forced to spend searching for the elusive White Ranger figurine? The frenzy continues. Three seasons after the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers scissorkicked their way to fame, the series gets a makeover: a new title, new uniforms, a few new color assignments, and many fiendish new villains to battle. ************************************************************************** **** NICE TO MEET YOU INTERNET ADDRESS: RanmaRo@aol.com REAL NAME: Rogelio Morales BIRTHDATE: 10/13/82 CURRENT RESIDENCE: Chicago, IL FAVE EPISODE: "Rangers Back In Time" FAVE QUOTE: "Welcome to my NIGHTMARE, Hya!!" ************************************************************************** **** SABAN SIGHTINGS! -- Sarah Brown (of "VR Troopers") is now a regular on "General Hospital". * Thanks to LLinkJr@aol.com for this sighting. -- Austin St. John's "Karate Masters" is now on sale! -- Bumper Robinson, who played Karan-Ashley's brother on "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" is going to play Ivan on the 4/25/96 episode of "Living Single". -- The new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" comic book (#1) features the Turtles fighting a group of superheroes, who *closely* resemble the Power Rangers. -- Mark "Maxmouze" Oxman spotted both Saban Studios AND Saban Entertainment on a trip to southern California. Saban Studios is across from Magic Mountain and Saban Entertainment is a *huge* glass building with the new Saban logo on top. -- On the WB Kids Crazy Careers, it showed how to make newspapers. The camera showed an ad printing out, and it was the ad for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, and it said "THINK YOU'VE SEEN IT ALL? SEE IT AGAIN!". (I have this ad - - that's how I recognized it.) -- Mark Oxman spotted LOADS of Power Ranger toys at a Kmart in southern California. They had almost all of the zords and even some toys he didn't know existed. He left empty-handed, however, because he couldn't decide which item to get. -- There is a coloring book called "Super Rangers", about five teenagers who turn into colorful superheroes. -- There is a gum video (You know, they look like miniature videos, but their really just bubble gum inside) of a "movie" called Mighty Mutant Power Turtles Battle the Secretive Goo... ************************************************************************** **** MIGHTY MUTANT POWER TURTLES Here's the funny parody written on the "bubblegum video". Mighty Mutant Power Turtles Battles The Secretive Goo: BHS Video Gum Picture a lone city street, now picture an evil corporation that dumps radioactive psychomagnetic goop into their sewers to save on dumping permit charges. Now wipe that out because this story has nothing to do with that. It's really about a bunch of high school students that get really bored one day and decide to run down to the local Kwik-Chicken for some nuggets and gravy. Upon getting their orders they realize just how runny their gravy is. That's all it takes to turn a group of local sniveling punks into the semi-combat ready team of fast-food vigilantes we know as the Mighty Mutant Power Turtles. In their relatively high-powered suits (as high powered as store-bought spandex bike suits get anyway) they cruise the night in their search for evil. Such targets are on their list as drive thru windows dispensing incorrect orders to hapless victims, or overcooked french fries with that black grease gunk on one half. So if you ever work fast food or slow-service stop, be careful, lest you be, like, covered with ketchup or something. Approx. Chewing time: Like, 363 seconds PT: POWER --------- TURTLE ************************************************************************** **** ASK MAX Q: Who is playing Tanya? A: Well, we all know by now, but I just want to make it clear that she's played by Nakia Burrise. Q: Will David Yost remain on the show? A: Apparently so. We all know that there will be a new Ranger: either Black or Gold -- and, Billy's been wearing a lot of black; plus, his name on the theme song is written in black (while the others are written in their Ranger color). Furthermore, he wouldn't be sticking around if the writers didn't have something bigger in store for him. Brad Hawkins may NOT be coming on the show, if David stays. Q: Have the 8" Power Ranger Zeo figures come out yet? -- LLinkJr A: Keep checking the stores. It takes them awhile to arrive in some areas. Q: What happened to VR Troopers? -- Matmilam A: It was canceled, because of bad ratings. It had aired 92 episodes, ending with "Galileo's New Memory" on February 21, 1996. ************************************************************************** STRETCH I am sorry to report that none of the Stretch's were either stretched enough or true. However, I could have overlooked a few. The stretch for "Disneyland" I had in mind was "Billy is a Power Ranger, David Yost plays Billy, David Yost performed a tumbling act for "Circus of the Stars", and he performed in front of Five & Dime, a store in Toontown at Disneyland". * Note: TAGJers will get to visit Five & Dime, where our former Blue Ranger stood. Today's stretch word is "Magic Mountain". (Notice the TAGJ theme) ************************************************************************** **** MUSIC BOX by Mark Oxman (Maxmouze@aol.com) SHE'S GOT THE ANSWERS (Rick Hromadka) So many questions, they're all tryin' to decide. She's got a secret up her sleeve. Looks like a jacket, and she'd rather take a ride. Count every second till she leaves. Chorus: 'Cause she's got the answers, always holdin' some kind of key. Yes, she's got the answers, and she's also got a hold on me. She's got a smile and awake for every sigh. When there's a sparkle in her eyes. Never loses power, she's a graceful butterfly. But, there's a reason why she's wise. * Chorus * She'll be ready when they put her to the test. She's got the knowledge in a safe place. Wonders what she'll do tonight, maybe buy a dress. (from the Fox Kids web site and TV Guide) Monday, April 22: * A ZEO BEGINNING, PART I The teens can hardly believe what they've seen-the command center, for years their sanctuary from the devious Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, lies in ruins before them, the fate of their friend Alpha and their mentor Zordon uncertain.
