On July 6th, I sent Rachel Herndon, Debbie Herndon, and Stephanie Herndon the same message: "Which one of you got the rest interested in Power Rangers? How did you become interested?" I had always wondered this and wanted to find out. Here are the responses... Debbie Herndon (NinjaMousy@aol.com)'s response: I got my sisters interested in MMPR. In the fall of my 8th grade year, Stephanie and Rachel were both in the high school drama production, and the rehearsals kept them busy until late into the night almost every day. This made me very lonely :-( and there was nothing for me to do all day except veg and watch T.V. Since Batman the Animated Series was the only attention-worthy program on the Fox network at the time, that's what I would watch after school. Until one fateful day, Batman's time slot was replaced with MMPR. At first I was really pissed off, you know, Batman, a staple of Americana, being subbed for by a chintzy Japanese kids show. But, by 4:30 in the afternoon, after an hour of daytime T.V. on NBC, my butt had glued itself to the couch and I had not enough energy to walk across the room and turn off the T.V. So I though, okay, whatever, this should be good for a couple of laughs. By the end of the week I was hooked. at the dinner table, once Stephanie and Rachel were home, I would tell them about the day's hilarious and intriguing (well, maybe not) episode, and they would look at me funny and tell me I was retarded. But once the play got over with, their after-school ritual became the same as mine, butt glued to the couch in religious laziness. The rest is Power Ranger history. Rachel Herndon (Lunette339@aol.com)'s answer: Okay. It's not very interesting, but this is how it happened. A long time ago, I, Rachel, also known as Lunette339, was sixteen. I saw the preview commercials on Fox, probably while I was watching the Batman animated series. And I thought it looked kind of cool. Brightly colored spandex-suited martial artists, and all that... why not? So of course I watched these commercials for about a month and got very curious and hyped up. When that fateful Saturday finally came, I got up early to watch cartoons, as usual, and dragged Aharhel (Stephanie, then seventeen) and NinjaMousy (Debbie, then fourteen) from their usual Saturday morning slumbers to watch it with me. They were very underwhelmed about the whole thing, since it seemed like just the month before I'd dragged them from their beauty sleep to watch Fox's version of "Thunderbirds," which none of us were very impressed with, and they were expecting the same from Power Rangers. So we watched the pilot. And they hated it. Oh, did I mention that our mother was also in the room? I think that's kind of what spoiled it... we just couldn't goof off and have fun watching such a corny show with Mom in the room (No offense, Yvonne). So they didn't like it, I didn't really make an effort to watch it, after that, and that was the end of it... until... (It's really weird, the only thing I remember about that episode were the Zords. I can't recall anything else at all. ) So it was quite a while later. Stephanie and I were both in a play after school, which left Debbie in control of the TV. She started watching Power Rangers again, and really fell for it. When the play was over, she refused to watch anything other than Power Rangers, and we started watching too. It was great. We came in right in the middle of the Missing Green saga and all that. We were kind of confused about what was going on with the green power, but it was still cool. We couldn't believe we hadn't watched it from the start. The week that they re-ran the Green with Evil miniseries was the best ever. Anyway, this was also about the time we first signed online and started receiving Max's newsletter, which we thought was pretty cool, and it also introduced us to alt.fan.power-rangers, and of course we are now regulars there as well. And I guess that's the story of how the Herndon Sisters became fans of Power Rangers. ************************************************************************** **** NICE TO MEET YOU E-MAIL ADDRESS : n9502131@hud.ac.uk REAL NAME : Wan Aziah Idris Muhamad Idris a.k.a Azie Jamilah BIRTHDATE : 1/23/75 CURRENT RESIDENCE : Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, UK FAVE EPISODE : "A Bad Reflection On You" FAVE QUOTE: "Man, the Power Rangers are being framed!" In the new Jeff Foxworthy/Must See TV commercial on NBC, Jeff Foxworthy is going through the "Must See TV" manual with his little boy. The little boy asks "Is that anything like Power Rangers?" * Thanks to Jennifer Bigley for this sighting. In the National Inquirer, there was a story on a mother who killed her two sons. They were having a normal day before they were killed and playing their favorite game, Power Rangers. * Thanks to Grace Trias for this sighting. An episode of "The Price is Right" had a movie-studio theme for one of the Showcase Showdowns. The top ten reasons why Austin St. John will be the Gold Ranger. 10. Billy didn't become enough of a "mega-jock". 9. Back-up in case his movie is a flop. 8. Fans missed his bad acting. 7. Switzerland didn't want him anymore. 6. So that Saban will be able to make the long awaited "Austin St. John Punching Bag". 5. Fans missed his bad acting. 4. So that Saban can change the *known* color of yet another Ranger, and confuse even more parents. 3. Fans missed his bad acting. 2. Making Billy a costumed Ranger again would have been "too easy". And, the number one reason why Austin St. John will be the Gold Ranger is... FANS ARE RUNNING OUT OF AUSTIN ST. JOHN JOKES! ************************************************************************** **** STRETCH The stretch word is Issue #71 was "calendar". Bricks Winzer had the three top stretch's. 3RD PLACE: "A calendar contains lots of dates. Tommy and Kimberly went on a lot of dates!" -- bricks@fhills.starway.net.au 2ND PLACE: "A calendar can have important events marked on it: the Teen Conference is one such event." -- bricks@fhills.starway.net.au 1ST PLACE: "A calendar contains dates, dates are periods of time, and the Rangers have been sent back in time on many occasions." -- bricks@fhills.starway.net.au Today's stretch word is "vacation". ************************************************************************** **** T.J. ROBERTS -- UNMASKED! [PART THREE] T.J.: TOTALLY TALENTED -- Mr. Roberts Takes Off the Masked Rider Mask! From the September 1996 issue of "SuperTeen": You know him as Dex, the alien superhero on TV's top-rated action hit, Masked Rider. Listen in as SuperTeen talks to the gorgeous guy behind the mask! SUPERTEEN: Did you expect that Masked Rider would become such a huge hit when you signed on? T.J.: I thought that it would do well, but I'm very surprised that it went to number one so quickly. I was very excited about that! I'm having a blast doing it -- it's a lot of fun! SUPERTEEN: Do you get recognized in public? T.J.: I get recognized for my films too (Magic Kid, A Dangerous Place), because they've been airing on HBO and Cinemax for a while now. It's funny -- I was in San Diego the other day at a haunted house. A lot of tourists go through there. I was there with my family and these kids were looking at me. I overheard them saying, "Oh, that's not the Masked Rider -- it doesn't even look like him!" I thought that was pretty funny. I get that a lot actually! SUPERTEEN: How long have you been doing karate? T.J.: I started doing martial arts when I was about seven years old, and I've been doing karate now for about eight and half years now. It's great for keeping in shape and it's actually helped me a lot with my acting because they teach you how to focus. I'll always do martial arts as far as working out and stuff. SUPERTEEN: Do you plan to stick with Masked Rider for much longer? T.J.: No -- I have six more episodes of Masked Rider to do, but then I'll probably be leaving. My shows will be on for a while because we've shot a lot of episodes, but I definitely want to go on to films with straight acting roles. I've always wanted to be a dramatic actor. SUPERTEEN: Are you concerned about leaving a hit show? T.J.: Not really. It's really not leaving -- it's like finishing up. And I'm excited to jump into some heavy roles soon. I'd like to do anything with Al Pacino! Or something like what Nicholas Cage did in Leaving Las Vegas, but for a younger audience. Definitely something that will open people's minds. SUPERTEEN: A lot of actors would be content to stay with a number one show. What makes you different? T.J.: I always have goals -- I never stop and say this is where I want to be, I'm just going to stay here and not grown anymore. I always want to keep growing and growing, and my goals are getting bigger and bigger! ************************************************************************** **** PRZ POLL #13 It's suggestion box time. What new columns do you want to see? What songs can be in the Music Box? What polls can be made? Stretches? Top ten lists? * Your vote counts!!! * Here's what we've got so far: Why don't you have the members come up with poetry about Power Rangers? -- Bricks Winzer Great idea, Bricks. So, send in your Power Ranger poetry now! ************************************************************************** **** ASK MAX Q: Do you know anything about the Power Rangers movie sequel? A: It will be produced by Shuki Levy and Haim Saban. It's going to be a "real" Power Rangers movie -- full of fun, action, and a great story. The working title is "Power Rangers -- Race to the Volcano". It will begin filming in September and a lot of it is going to be filmed in Florida. There are some underwater scenes in it. Q: Do you know any of the actors/actresses from "Power Rangers" middle names? A: Here are some that I know: Walter Emanuel Jones, Amy Jo Johnson, David Harold Yost, Jason David Frank, Karan Ashley Jackson, Johnny Yong Bosch, and Steven Antonio Cardenas. Q: Who is the Gold Ranger? -- t/kdingler@NWGA.com A: The Gold Ranger is Austin St. John -- I found out the info. but no one seems to credit me. Q: For the past three years, Saban puts a new superhero show out each fall? Do you know what one is coming out this fall? -- AmaDeusVox A: It's called "Big Bad Beetleborgs". It will replace Masked Rider, since it's ratings weren't high enough.. Q: Which came first: "A Different Shade of Pink" miniseries or "I'm Dreaming of a White Ranger"? -- Wiskers198@aol.com A: "A Different Shade of Pink" aired first. Kimberly returned in the Christmas episode, however (and, Kat was in it, too -- at least on the video version). Q: Was the Yellow Ranger a man in "ZyuRangers"? -- TKD27@aol.com A: Yes. The first season footage featured a lot of footage from ZyuRangers and that's why Trini's costume is not as feminine as Kimberly's, since the Pink ZyuRanger was a girl. Q: Why did Curtis and Richie get put on the show? -- bricks@fhills.starway.net.au A: The news about a White Ranger got out, and some people noticed that Walter wasn't showing up (as well as the two others). So, they had these two come on the show to throw the viewers off. ************************************************************************** BLAST FROM THE POWER PAST Billy- Hi, I'm Billy.
