Revisiting Power Rangers

Revisiting Power Rangers is a project which compares the video of the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with that of the reversioned ones currently airing on ABC Kids. For the most part, we leave it to the fan to make their own (educated) decisions on whether the changes are improvements or not.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers versus Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (2010)

In 1993, two astronauts encountered a space dumpster on a rogue planetoid during the day.

In 2010, two astronauts encountered a space dumpster on the moon at night.

Also of note - TV ratings didn't exist in 1993 and close-captioning was much more uncommon.

Roughly three seconds into the first episode of this re-issuing, some fans were immediately turned off. Cartoony lighning graphics and 3D effects highlight Rita's escape.

Very much nighttime on the moon, which may be best for the now 15+ year old sentai footage.

Should the Earth be brighter in the Moon's night sky? Ask your favorite astronomer.

The original shot of Alpha pushing a red button is from the episode "Day of the Dumpster."

The new shot of Alpha pushing buttons is not from the episode "Day of the Dumpster."

The original shot of the teens being teleported to the Command Center for this first time is not the shot from the final aired version of "Day of the Dumpster," whereas the new shot is.

In 1993, The drumroll featured a quick frame-to-frame transistions between the logo forming and the Megazord Battle Mode standing up.

In 2010, the Megazord Battle Mode simply stands up.

Pure sentai footage versus sentai footage plus cartoony effects. Make your own decisions.

Old logo versus new logo. Personally, the "crookedness" of the new logo drives me crazy.

In 1993, Jason does a tornado kick and the viewer is impressed.

In 2010, Jason does a tornado kick, causing the screen to flip, and the viewer is...?

Ranger cast screen. Honestly, not a bad change.

At first, the option to change to the new scene seemed to make sense if they were pulling scenes from "Day of the Dumpster" exclusively... except they aren't. Apparently Hip Hop Kido isn't as Hip in 2010.

A slightly different cut of Billy's first fight with the Putties.

The newer choice for a shot of the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord is clearer...

...but the older choice for a shot of the Mastodon Dinozord was clearer.

The old shot of the Rangers with their Power Coin symbols was always gritty and dark, but that could be fixed with pulling a shot from better material. Instead, let's emphasize the "Go! Go!" that is present in the theme song.

Another cast screen. Not sure about the skull and crossbones as a choice for a background.

A change in the shot of Zordon that is used.

An angle change on the shot of the Dinozords.
