V.__***TRADING CARDS***__ --------------------------- Much like baseball and other sports, television shows have their own trading cards and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is no exception. V.1. =*= Collect-A-Card =*= In each of the three series, there have been multiple editions. All of these editions contain the same cards and pictures, unless noted. This company also released "super packs" of cards which might be considered "series four" -- I've listed the description under "SuperPacks". V.1.a. Series One This series was released in 1994, and is available in two sets: the hobby edition and the Walmart edition. This series covers the first half of season one. The basic HOBBY set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 1 to 72). The subsets are: 72 foil cards, and 10 milk caps. One pack comes with 7 regular cards, 1 foil, and 1 milk cap. The pack is purple; the regular card borders are red, multicolored. The foils are identical to the 72 regular cards except their borders are "foiled" and in some cards, the pictures are "foiled" too. The milk caps consist of five Rangers' power coins and five pictures of their power morphers. The basic WALMART set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 1 to 72). The subset is: 12 foil cards. One pack comes with 6 regular cards, and 1 foil. The pack is green; the regular borders are green, multicolored. The foils feature Rita, Goldar, Squatt, Baboo, King Sphinx, Megazord, each of the five zords, and a group picture of the Rangers in the Command Center. Each picture is foiled. **note** This is the ONLY Walmart edition to feature 40+ different pictures than the hobby edition. The rest of the Walmart editions have cards identical to their respective hobby editions. V.1.b. Series Two Several months later, Series 2 was released. With the success of the first series, the company decided to make additional editions. However, they did not change any of the editions' cards except for the color of the border. This series is available in four sets: hobby, Walmart, and two retail editions. This series covers the second half of season one. The basic HOBBY set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 73 to 144). The subsets are: 72 foil cards, 12 Magic Morphers, and 5 Gold Foil cards. One pack comes with 7 regular cards, and 1 foil. The Magic Morphers are randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:18 packs; the Gold Foils are randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:72 packs. In a case of cards, there is one Dealer's card. It is similar to the Gold Foil cards and is numbered D-1. The pack is black; the regular borders are yellow. The foils are identical to the regular cards, except their borders are foiled. The Magic Morphers are cards with two pictures each, where one picture can be seen depending on the angle the card is held. The cards feature: Red Ranger/Jason, Pink/Kimberly, Yellow/Trini, Black/Zack, Blue/Billy, each of their dinosaurs/dinozords, Megazord, and Putty Patrol. The Gold Foils are cards with the MMPR logo stamped in "gold." They feature biographies of the five original Rangers: #F-1 Jason, #F-2 Kimberly, #F-3 Trini, #F-4 Zack, and #F-5 Billy. The basic WALMART set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 73 to 144). The subset is: 50 milk caps. One pack comes with 5 regular cards, and 1 cap. The pack is blue; the regular borders are light blue. The milk caps are identical to the Series 1 Milkcaps (not to be confused with the caps with the Series 1 CARDS). They feature pictures identical to Series 1 cards' pictures. The basic RETAIL #1 set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 1 to 72). The subset is: 12 foil cards. One pack comes with 12 regular cards, and 1 foil. Each pack also come with a puzzle decoder to answer trivia questions on the backs of cards. The pack is dark pink; the regular borders are blue. The foils consist of pictures identical to some of the regular cards, except the numbers are different and the borders are foiled. **note** This set was also distributed in various Walmarts, and could be considered another Walmart set. The basic RETAIL #2 set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 73 to 144). The subset is: 72 foil cards. One pack comes with 7 regular cards, and 1 foil. The pack is pink; the regular borders are pink. The foils are identical to the regular cards, except the borders are foiled. V.1.c. Series Three (New Season) With second season starting, these cards were released in early 1995. They were supposed to be released in November 1994, but were delayed. Because the company had already started production when the news of the "new Rangers" were mentioned, they added 3 Bonus Cards of the 3 new Rangers (Rocky, Aisha, and Adam). One of these Bonus Cards comes to every pack, no matter what edition it is. This series is available in three sets: hobby, Walmart, and retail editions. The basic HOBBY set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 1 to 72). The subsets are: 72 foil cards, 8 Plasticards, and 3 Bonus Cards. One pack comes with 7 regular cards, 1 foil, and 1 Bonus Card. The Plasticards are randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:18 packs. In the case, another Dealer's card is available - The White Ranger card. The pack is pink and vertical (unlike Series 1 & 2 packs) and the regular cards have NO border. The foils are identical to the regular cards, except the borders are foiled. The Plasticards or clear-screens feature the six Rangers (Pink, Yellow, Red, Black, Blue, White), "Mega-thunderzord" , and Lord Zedd. The character's picture is cut and placed on a clear card. They are numbered "CS". The basic WALMART set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 1 to 72). The subsets are: 8 character cards, and 3 Bonus Cards. One pack comes with 5 regular cards, 1 character card, and 1 Bonus Card. The pack is pink and horizontal (like Series 1 & 2 packs) and the regular borders are multicolored. The character cards are identical to the Plasticards, except instead of clear cards, there are backgrounds and a few descriptions printed on the backside. They feature the "Gold Foil" stamp of the MMPR logo (like Series 2 hobby Gold Foils). They are numbered "AN". The basic RETAIL set consists of 72 regular cards (numbered 1 to 72). The subsets are: 72 foil cards, 8 White Ranger cards, and 3 Bonus Cards. One pack comes with 7 regular cards, and 1 foil. The White Ranger cards are randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:8 packs. The pack is blue and vertical, and the regular borders are green. The White Ranger cards tell the story of how Tommy lost his Green Ranger powers and became the White Ranger. They have the "Gold Foil" stamp of the MMPR logo. They are numbered "WR". V.1.d. SuperPacks In summer 1995, two super packs of cards were released. Each pack contains 12 regular cards, 4 super foil caps, and 1 power blaster. Each pack is a "set" in itself; there is no need to buy many packs to make a set. The regular cards are reminiscent of Series One pictures, but have descriptions that pertain to the second season of the tv show. These cards are a K-Mart exclusive. In pack #1, the super foil caps are Red Ranger, Green Ranger, Yellow Ranger, and Alpha 5. These caps are not numbered. The power blaster is Tigerzord in warrior mode. In pack #2, the super foil caps are White Ranger, Pink Ranger, Blue Ranger, and Black Ranger. These caps are not numbered. The power blaster is MegaThunderzord. V.2. =*= Fleer _THE MOVIE_ Series =*= In June 1995, Fleer Entertainment released two sets of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers__ The Movie": the Fleer Ultra set, and the Fleer (Walmart) set. The basic ULTRA set consists of 150 regular cards. The subsets are: 24 Power Pop-Ups (inserted 1:1 pack), 12 Holograms (inserted 1:4 regular packs; and 1:3 Jumbo packs), and 8 Holofoils (randomly inserted 1:18 regular packs; 1:12 Jumbo packs). One regular pack comes with 7 regular cards, and 1 Pop-Up. One Jumbo pack comes with 9 regular cards, and 1 Pop-Up. The pack is black; the regular cards have NO border but are UV coated on superior quality stock, and have the silver movie logo stamp. The Pop-Ups feature Tommy, Aisha, Rocky, Kimberly, Billy, Adam, the six Rangers, White Ninja, Pink Ninja, Evil Space Aliens, Dulcea, Alpha 5, and Rollin' Rocky. These cards can be... well... popped-up, enabling them to stand. The Holograms feature the six teenagers as Ninjas, Evil Space Aliens, Dulcea, and Bulk & Skull. These cards are silver in color. The images are placed among a silver lightning bolt background. The Holofoils feature the six Ninja zords and their two Megazord combinations. These cards are like colored holograms. The basic Fleer (WALMART) set consists of 150 regular cards. There are no subsets. One regular pack comes with 6 cards; the cards have NO border, aren't UV coated, and have the gray movie logo stamp. V.3. =*= FOX KIDS CLUB =*= During Summer 1994, the Fox Kids Club magazine _Totally Kids_ featured 4 cut-out trading cards of the Power Rangers. Because this is a general kids' television magazine, other numbers of the "set" might be cards of shows like "Batman" and "X-Men." The four cards are: #25 Trini, #26 Billy, #27 Tommy, and #28 Goldar. For the first three cards, the front picture is the teen in costume; the back is the teen in normal clothes. For Goldar, both pictures are of Goldar. V.4. =*= "BONUS CARDS" with Audio Tapes =*= Several episodes of the Power Rangers program have been converted to audio tape. Along with these tapes came four Bonus Trading Cards, some of which were "autographed" by the actor(s). With "On Fins and Needles", the four cards are: Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, Jason David Frank (as Green Ranger), and a card of the 6 Rangers. The first three are signed. With "Island of Illusion", the four cards are: White Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson, Bulk & Skull, and Goldar. The first three are signed. With "Lord Zedd's Holiday Humbug" (the audio version of the video "Alpha's Magical Christmas"), the four cards are: Steve Cardenas, John Bosch, David Yost, and Lord Zedd. The first three are signed. With "the White Album" (version of "White Light"), the four cards are: White Ranger without helmet, White Ranger with helmet, Tommy, and Tigerzord. The backs are a "puzzle" that form a large picture of White Ranger with his signature. V.5. =*= DZ (Discovery Zone) =*= Advertised on television in June 1995, there is a set of six cards (one of each Ranger) with the backs forming a puzzle picture of the six Rangers. To get a card, you must go to DZ for more info. This is one of many promos for the Movie. V.6. =*= JELL-O =*= In Summer 1995 boxes of JELL-O brand products, there are 8 "trading cards" advertising the Movie's characters. These cards aren't numbered. They feature cartoon/comic images of the Rangers, Ivan Ooze, and Ninja Megazord. They come in the 3 ounce and 6 ounce boxes. V.7. =*= Bandai - Cardzillions =*= Released in 1995/1996, cardzillions can only be found in card vending machines at Toys R Us. They cost $0.25 each and are randomly drawn out. There are four sets of cardzillions, the MMPR series one and two, the All Star set, and the PRZ set, each containing 42 cards with 6 of those cards being the shiny chase cards. These cards feature original photographs and pictures from the show. The cards are supposedly playable, with each set having different rules, and each card having a different "Medallion" or emblem on the front. The MMPR series one set contains cards of all the rangers, all the ninjazords, Zordon, Alpha, Bulk & Skull, and Evil Space Aliens. To play the game, the rules are as follows: (1) each player receives the same number of cards; (2) each player keeps his card in a shuffled pile; (3) each takes the top cardzillion from his pile and puts it on the table; (4) the player with the most powerful card takes all the cards on the table; (5) if there is at least a two-way tie, everyone just goes again, increasing the number of cards for the taking; (6) if a Bulk & Skull card is thrown, all cards remain, and everyone goes again. The player who gets everyone's cards wins! The medallions are: Mighty Morphin (MM), Power Teens (PT), Evil Space Aliens (ESA), Ninja Power Mega (NPM), Evil Power Mega (EPM), and Bulk & Skull Mega (BSM). The triangle of power (what beats what) is: MM beats ESA; ESA beats PT; PT beats MM; EPM beats all but NPM; NPM beats all others; BSM negates all. The MMPR series two set continues from series one with numbers 43-84. It also features the "newest" Ranger at that time -- Kat. The All Star set contains cards of only the rangers. To play the game, the rules are as follows: (1) each player is dealt 5 cards; (2) players take turns discarding and picking up cards from a pile; (3) the object is to get all 5 power weapon emblems. The emblems are: Power Sword, Power Bow, Power Axe, Power Lance, Power Dagger, Saba (wild card), Rita's Staff (does nothing), and Zedd's Staff (must discard all 5 cards). The PRZ set features pictures and information of the new Power Rangers Zeo, including the Zeo Rangers (Kat, Tanya, Rocky, Adam, Tommy), the Machine Empire, and the new Zeo zords. VI.__***MILK CAPS***__ ------------------------ The fad of the 1990s, the cap "game" originated in Hawaii and the name POG originated from Passion Orange Guava drinks, where these caps came from. The name POG has been copyrighted and only selected milk caps are officially called POGs. Hence, the term used in this section will be referred to as "caps" even though in common day language, the terms are interchangable. VI.1. =*= Collect-A-Card =*= VI.1.a. Series One In 1994, this company released the first set of MMPR caps. This set consists of 50 caps and 12 slammers. One pack comes with 5 caps. Slammers are randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:9 packs, and when they are inserted, 3 caps are taken out of the pack. The pack is dark blue. The slammers feature Jason, Trini, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Red Ranger, Yellow Ranger, Black Ranger, Pink Ranger, Blue Ranger, Rita Repulsa, and the MMPR logo. The teenagers and Rangers are in their respective colors; Rita is purple; the logo is orange. The images are painted or etched on clear plastic slammers. VI.1.b. Series Two In 1995, the second set of MMPR caps was released. The set consists of 40 caps and 6 slammers. One pack comes with 5 caps. Slammers are randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:9 packs. The pack is black. The slammers are thicker than Series 1 slammers, and feature images on colored plastic. There have been variations in packs that these caps are available in. The "Power Caps" pack looks like a card pack, and comes with 8 caps & 1 slammer. The "Game Pack" comes as a 8x10 cardboard sheet with a plastic form holding the caps; it comes with 15 caps and 1 slammer. VI.2. =*= Foil Caps =*= The distributer/manufacturer for these caps are unknown. (Most likely it is Collect-A-Card as well, like the SuperPacks of cards). The "Power Blister" pack comes with 25 foil caps (foil-drawn image on the front; plain white on the back) and 1 slammer. VI.3. =*= McDonalds =*= In December 1994, McDonalds released the MMPR "Power Coins." In the set, there are 12 caps and 1 slammer/disc. This set also features Saban's VR Troopers. The Power Ranger caps are: White Ranger, Pink Ranger, Yellow Ranger, Blue Ranger, Black Ranger, Red Ranger, Zedd, and Goldar. The VR Troopers caps are: Ryan, J.B., Kaitlin, and Jebb. The disc is black plastic with a rainbow silver swirl of colors on the top. VII.__***STICKERS***__ -------------------------- Listed are the sticker album sets manufactured by Merlin Collections. There have been other stickers made, such as those in vending machines, but they are not listed here because they are hard to keep track of and not everyone has access to them. VII.1. =*= Series One =*= In 1994, the first sticker album was released. The album has 48 pages and is green. The set contains 244 stickers plus 7 duplicates for the inside of the back cover. The album covers first season of the Power Rangers, includes individual pages for each of the six Rangers. One pack comes with 6 stickers. VII.2. =*= Series Two =*= In early 1995, the second album was released. The album has 32 pages and is orange. The set contains 198 stickers, and covers second season with the introduction of the new Rangers, Rocky, Aisha, and Adam; and Tommy as Green to White Ranger. One pack comes with 6 stickers. VII.3. =*= __the Movie__ =*= In Summer 1995, _the Movie_ sticker album was released. The album has 31 pages and is black. The set contains 180 stickers plus 18 stand-ups. One pack comes with 5 stickers and 1 stand-up. VIII.__***COMICS***__ -------------------------- The comics were supposed to be released in 1994. However, due to delays mainly on Saban's end (according to Nat Gertler), they were finally released in December 1994 by Hamilton Comics (the Bruce Hamilton Company). Hamilton Comics produced the first series (6 issues) and the second series (4 issues) of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics. In August 1995, they released their second title (3 issues), the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Saga comics. The Saga comics were supposed to be a 6-issue series, but were cut to 3-issues. This is because sales were dropping, and the Hamilton company (who was scheduled to lose the MMPR rights to Marvel in December 1995) arranged to stop early. Marvel was eager to get their series going, and accepted taking over the license early. **NOTE** Marvel has dropped the series, and according to sources, an independent publisher (Image?) has picked it up. The Movie comic was published by Marvel Comics in July 1995. Marvel released their MMPR comic series, and a new title "MMPR-Ninja Rangers / VR Troopers" in November 1995. They currently are the publishers of the comic series. Hamilton no longer produces them. The comics are published monthly. VIII.1. =*= Hamilton Comics =*= **In the Spring 1994, an 8-page "mini-comic" tale was produced as a premium for FRUIT-of-the-LOOM. It was unavailable through newsstands and comic book retailers. If you are able to get a hold of this comic, you may find that some characters with the wrong names; this is because those were the names Saban had on the style sheets and had insisted that just what was there be used.** Credits for the comics are as follows; the writer and artists change monthly. Colored by Summer Hinton. Edited by John Clark & Gary Leach. Lettered by A. Machine. Creative Consultant - Cheryl Saban. Storylines change for each comic. The simple plot is that Zedd creates a monster that forced the teenagers to morph and defeat it. In these comics, Zedd acts more like Rita and uses Finster to create his monsters, instead of what is portrayed on the television show (second season). This is due to the fact that some of these stories were written over a year before they were published, and the comics were quickly produced with Zedd slapped in instead of Rita. This also explains why some of the new Rangers sometimes acted like the old Rangers. Saban never gave Hamilton comics notice on what changes were going to take place, and stories written with the old Rangers merely had the new Rangers dropped in place. That was one of the problems dealing with continuity; the writers worked very hard to keep up with continuity, but there's only so much one can do. At one point, Hamilton comics had planned to give the Green Ranger his own series. Continuing Tommy as a regular member of the team had not yet been planned then, so this was supposed to give the writers a chance to do something that wasn't so closely tied to the TV continuity, something where they could build their own continuity, and something where few (if any) of the stories would involve Rita and her gang. According to Nat Gertler, "had the Hamilton series continued, there would have been more variation from the standard format -- more solo stories, more odd little one-offs. Within the monster format... the format of the TV show... we did try to deliver some different stuff." VIII.1.a. Series One This series was also made into a trade paperback. #1 - Dec 1994 - "The Menace of Dracula" features Jason, Trini, Zack, Billy, and Kimberly. Tommy, the Green Ranger, was mentioned but not seen. The monster had no name; it came from Billy's Dracula moth specimen. Credits: written by Donald D. Markstein; drawn by Gray Morrow. A: Collect-A-Card is really working for Lord Zedd and never wants us to get that card! It comes one per case and is called the Dealer's Card, which means they can price it very high (around $20). Q: When are the movie cards coming out? A: When Lord Zedd and Rita have their first child or when June 1995 roles by... whichever comes first. Q: How can I get the uncut sheet of movie cards? A: You have to surrender yourself to Goldar... or ask the company and your internet card friends. The uncut sheet appeared in the May 1995 issue of "Previews" Magazine. It was also given as a promo in card and comic-related conventions. Q: Are the comics really released on those dates? A: Uhh... this is a loaded question, right? Q: Can you get me a card? A: Who me? :) Sure, just ask. Q: What sets are planned for the future? A: The Lord Zedd monster hall of fame?
