A sneak peak at issue 82. ************************************************************************** **** THE PIPER by Jack Turk Submitted by Yvonne Plante and typed up by Mark Oxman I interviewed Jason while he was on the set of Piper in the CD-ROM title produced by Splash Studios in Redmond, Washington. Jason was taking a short break from his regular role as Tommy in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers so that he could play the lead role of Piper. Piper was shot entirely on a blue screen, which means that there were no sets or environments behind the actors, only a BIG BLUE screen. All the background shots were designed by artists and made by the computer in a process called 3-D rendering. The final stage of the production is when the actors and the computer backgrounds are put together in the computer. Very high tech. Q: What are some of the differences between the Piper character and Tommy the Power Ranger? A: Well, a big difference is that Piper's from the 1880's--he's got that whole old West thing. He's a con man who turns good. If I was Tommy as the Piper, I'd just be Tommy. Q: How do you think your fans will respond to you as Piper? A: Really well. The real little ones, four and five, they might not exactly get it, but the older ones, they know what it means to be an actor. I mean, kids are smart. And they'll identify with the Piper. Q: What do you mean by that? A: Piper's a charmer. He likes to flatter people. And I'm like that, I like to charm and be nice to people. We have that in common. Q: As Piper you worked in a set made completely from computer graphics. What was that like? A: It was really interesting. I've worked in a blue background before, but nothing where everything's being done with computers. And this is the first time I've worked where when you shoot against a blue screen you get to see what it will look like right away. A lot of people are saying this is the best done so far. Q: What was the most fun about working on Piper? A: Lots of things. Playing a different character--Piper's definitely not a Power Ranger. This is a whole new different role--and I like to do different things. I liked being in a different state, particularly Washington because we're going to live here someday. It was also great that my wife could be on the set with me. Q: What was it about Piper that attracted you? A: I really like that it was a non-violent, learning game for kids. It teaches you how to find clues, do math, play tunes--all this is important. And the story is cool. Piper was a conman, but he had heart. Cassie and the kids showed him what life was about. It's not about conning people. Life's about giving. Life's about caring. The important thing is to have the heart to care about people--because I care about people a lot. ************************************************************************** **** NICE TO MEET YOU E-MAIL ADDRESS: FalconCJ@aol.com or plante@earthlink.net REAL NAME: CJ Plante BIRTHDATE: 7/17/82 CURRENT RESIDENCE: Rosemead, CA FAVE EPISODE: "Green With Evil, Part V" FAVE QUOTE: "Ponytail too tight, pal?" -- Kimberly in "Best Man For the Job" ************************************************************************** **** SABAN SIGHTINGS! In the movie "Nick of Time", the villainess is reassuring Johnny Depp's character's daughter that her father's going to be alright, that he's going to be a hero. She asks "Like the Power Rangers?" and the villainess replies, "Yes, sweetie, like the Power Rangers." * Thanks to Jennifer Bigley for this sighting. ZeoKat (everettb@mt.arias.net) went to a Weird Al Yankovic concert and in one of his videos he played between songs, he was wearing a Power Rangers t-shirt. On Beavis and Butt-Head, while watching a music video, Butt-Head told Beavis to shut up or he was going to shove his Power Rangers up his butt. * Thanks to eberettb@mt.arias.net for this sighting, but let's all send her mail telling her not to watch "Beavis and Butt-Head", shall we? On the 9/13/96 edition of 20/20, the story was on fighting siblings and one of the children that was fighting was wearing Red Ranger tyrannosaurus pajamas, according to Ben Schummin. On "Weird Science", Gary was trying to impress a girl online and he said "I told her I invented the Wonder Bra, drive a Porche, and play the Yellow Power Ranger." * Thanks to EnsTomP@aol.com for this sighting. Unfortunately, Gary was mocking me and my accomplishments in this joke. (Just kidding -- I don't drive a Porche). Back when the Thunderzords were selling like crazy at Christmas time, a comic strip called "Safe Havens" (with a girl named Samantha and her dog Laptop) had a Saban Sighting. Samantha goes back to school and all her friends got Power Ranger stuff for Christmas, so the next day she comes to school wearing a GIGANTIC Power Rangers helmet -- one three times the size of her body. "On CNN Headline News, they were running a piece on kids and if they really wanted to grow up to be president. In the middle, a young boy was asked by the reporter what he wanted to be when he grew up and he said "A Power Ranger!" * Thanks to glehman@lakers.lssu.edu for this sighting. And, just so you know, I was very nervous about being on the news. ;) Soga Machiko, the original Rita, appeared in a V.R. Trooper episode titled "Despera Strikes Back" as Desponda. Rajia Baroudi, who played Delephine on the Alien Ranger miniseries, is now playing the voice of Jara on "Big Bad Beetleborgs". The head of King Sphinx was displayed on a comic book rack in the episode of "Big Bad Beetleborgs" titled "The Treasure of Hillhurst". On "Wild & Crazy Kids", they were doing a game at a lake and I recognized it as Castaic Lake (a.k.a. Angel Grove Lake and a TAGJ spot) but I thought I just had Power Rangers on the brain (as usual). I didn't -- it *was* Castaic Lake! Later, I found out the whole episode was filmed in Castaic. Amy Jo Johnson was on an episode of "Saved By the Bell: The New Class" as Linda. * Thanks to Joe Brogan (sbrogan@pen.k12.va.us), Jason Siebold (j7790036@themall.net) LeiLani M. Craig (Mesia13@aol.com), Amy Cartas (ACMeeko@aol.com), Owen Humphreys (EnsTomP@aol.com), Aaron Eiche (meiche@teleport.com), Ally (PurplePR@aol.com), Sanj Arora (al076@torfree.net) and everyone else who I was too lazy to add to the credit list, for this info. ************************************************************************** **** DID YOU KNOW ..... that Jason Andrew Narvy has a cross on his shoulder almost identical to the one Steve Cardenas has on his, but Jason's is on his left arm? ..... that Paul Schrier has directed two episodes of "Power Rangers", "Attack of the 60" Bulk" and "Water You Thinking?" ..... that there is also a Gold Ranger Zeonizer and the Golden staff? These were accidentally left off of the ZEO toy list. ..... that the two actors fighting the blind girl on "Trust In Me" were Danny (the thin Asian one), who played Rito and the Caucasian fighter was Ed, who played Lord Zedd and now a Cog? ..... that on "Song Sung Yellow", the record executive was Cy Roscoe, 2nd Assistant Director on "Power Rangers", who also played an ice cream truck vendor on "The Alien Trap"? The British director in the yellow jacket was Chris, the assistant director. ..... that Austin St. John's video, "Karate Masters" (which wasn't really good), was produced by "Party of Five" star Scott Wolf? ..... that producer of "Power Rangers" as well as other Saban shows, Scott Page-Pagter, plays the voice of Wolfgang on "Big Bad Beetleborgs"? ************************************************************************** **** TOP TEN LIST by Mary Raugh (Fringer@aol.com) Here they are! The top ten reasons the Power Rangers change zords so often. 10. Older zords can't keep up with rapidly changing California vehicle emission codes. 9. Zordon never buys the zords outright, he gets them on short term leases. 8. The Rangers keep exchanging them in order to get better sound systems. 7. As hard as it is to get replacement parts, it's usually faster to replace broken down zords than it is to repair them. 6. Duracell stopped making the mega-size batteries, so they had to get zords that ran off pyramid power. 5. Zordon trades them in when the service contracts expire. 4. The American-made zords just don't last as long as the ones made in Japan. 3. They had to get rid of the zords because the Voltron people threatened the Power Rangers with a copyright infringement lawsuit. 2. With improved impact resistance systems and theft systems, the insurance premiums on the zords are a lot lower than the previous ones. And, the number one reason why the Power Rangers keep changing their zords is.. WHILE BILLY HAS ALWAYS BEEN REALLY GOOD AT TAKING THINGS APART, HIS SKILL IN PUTTING THEM BACK TOGETHER AGAIN HAS ONLY RECENTLY CAME UP TO STANDARD. * Thanks for all the excellent top ten lists, guys. If you wrote one on "The top ten weird things about Power Rangers (the show)" or "The top ten most likely seminars Saban will have its employees attend", please e-mail me and tell me so, because I lost your names. ************************************************************************** **** STRETCH Unless I am mistaken, Bricks J. Winzer was the only one who responded to the stretch word "ladder". Here are his answers... 1. In the first moon landing, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin climbed down a ladder from the module. Rita's palace is on the moon. 2. Ladders are used for climbing, people climb mountains, and the Rangers have had a lot of battles with monsters in the mountains. 3. Ladders are used to go higher. When a monster grows, its head goes higher into the air. Today's stretch word is "wrinkles". ************************************************************************** **** MUSIC BOX "BIG BAD BEETLEBORGS" (Billy Forester) Three typical, average kids Inside a haunted mansion Just by chance, freed a ghost Who made them BeetleBorgs Big Bad BeetleBorgs Big Bad BeetleBorgs Big Bad BeetleBorgs Hey, look now -- they're superheroes Armed with superpowers. If so, have they ever been featured on the show? -- Ann Schumin A Jason David Frank has a wife and two kids, and Amy Jo was engaged but I don't know if she's married yet or not. A: The newsletter is late because I am currently involved in an afterschool project and soon will be involved in two afterschool projects. This will barely leave time for homework, let alone the newsletter. So, I'll have to find some way to squeeze it into my schedule because you all are very important to me and I'm doing my best not to let you down. Q: How many members get the newsletter? A: I'm happy to announce that there are currently 750 Power Ranger fans on the Net who receive the newsletter. ************************************************************************** **** FROM KIMBERLY TO LINDA First it's from Trini to Kali, now it's from Kimberly to Linda. On September 14th, Amy Jo Johnson was on an episode of "Saved By the Bell: The New Class". However, I was taping "Goosebumps" at the time and missed it. But, a LOT of people reported it (For a few of the names, check "Saban Sightings!") and here's what I managed to get out of their summaries... Screech got a crush on Amy Jo's character when she bought an ice cream from him at the yogurt shop he was working at in the mall. An upcoming dance contest gave an excuse for Screech to ask Linda on a date, but she refused because she didn't know how to dance and was afraid of making a fool of herself. Screech tried to teach her how to dance and when doing so, he changed himself completely and tried to "woo" her. He later found out she has a boyfriend in an upper class store. Then, Linda goes on a date with Screech and finds out he lied about everything and breaks his heart. Yes, I know it's a little choppy but so were the summaries I had to use. If you can clear this up, please do. And, if you have this episode on tape, e-mail me for easy money. ************************************************************************** **** THE PRZ BULLETIN BOARD If you have an announcement you'd like me to print, send it to "BULLETIN BOARD" at MAXMOUZE@aol.com! --- Today's quote was by Tommy in "Two For One". --- Maxmouze@aol.com is selling a complete set of "The New Series" cards with the Adam, Rocky, and Aisha bonus cards.
