I, Eye Guy

Revisiting Power Rangers visually compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Original: Fade in as astronauts open a space dumpster and lights swirl out. Rita Repulsa rises up and stretches in her space dumpster. Rita talks to her left as her minions stand about. Rita and her minions turn to their right, as the camera pans sharply up to the Earth in the sky.

Reversion: [Added footage recycled from Day of the Dumpster.] Fade in from black to a space shuttle flying toward a celestial object. Astronauts walk on the surface of the celestial object, with landed space shuttle, Earth & Moon behind them. POV of astronauts, seeing gleaming red in distance. Pointing astronauts start running. Astronauts approach space dumpster. Red gem on space dumpster gleams, astronaut grasps it then lets go. Top of space dumpster is pulled off, and colored streaks land on horizon becoming Goldar, Finster, Squatt, and Baboo, with lightning. Standing next to the space dumpster and now frightened, the two astronauts begin to run away. Zoom out from the space dumpster, revealing Goldar, Finster, Squatt, and Baboo standing on the horizon. Squatt reacts excitedly to being freed from the space dumpster. Astronauts, who have since fallen to the ground, attempt to escape and right themselves at the same time. Squatt walks up to and then shouts into the space dumpster. Rita rises up from inside space dumpster, stretching out arms happily. Squatt, with hands over mouth, turns to look up toward Rita, then fumbles in satchel as Baboo walks up and smacks him on the head. Close-up on Finster, who facepalms and talks before shaking self straight. Medium on Squatt and Baboo, with latter talking and then walking over to help Rita out of space dumpster. Rita stumbles upon escaping, turning to Baboo irritatedly. Rita turns view to space dumpster cover as camera pans and zooms in. With her minions standing behind her and the astronauts still visible in the distance, Rita uses her wand to blast and destroy the space dumpster, causing the monsters to briefly cheer. (Recycled) Astronauts, who have since fallen to the ground, attempt to escape and right themselves at the same time. With space dumpster remains in the foreground, monsters continue cheering. Rita turns to talk menacingly to the astronauts. Monsters also turn toward astronauts as Rita continues. Rita and her minions turn to their right as the camera quickly pans towards the Earth in the sky.

Close on Zack wearing hologame goggles, moving about excitedly.

Reversion: Runs thirty frames longer. Shot freezes on Zack cut out from black starry background as green triangles move in the background and red beams shoot out from the goggles upward and outward.

Close on Willy looking back and forth as teens surround him to protect him from Putties surrounding them.

Original: Camera fades to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: Inside black frame with eyeballs, Eye Guy, in Rita’s palace, turns around to face the camera. Zoom in on eye on Eye Guy’s right chest, showing insert of close on Eye Guy’s main eye opening up, then shooting blue energy beam to eye on left chest, showing insert of girl with baseball bat being kidnapped. Pan to eyeball on lower middle torso, showing insert of Willy being enveloped by blue energy beam from left off-screen. Pan down to eye on Eye Guy’s left knee, showing insert of Willy’s dropped blue hat. Crash to black.

Slowed slightly, medium on Kimberly aggressively kicking a Putty in the gut.

Reversion: As Kimberly connects with the kick, a comic-style “BIFF!” in pink lettering in a magenta starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Slowed slightly, Zack side jump kicks a Putty in the torso, camera pans as Putty falls to the ground.

Reversion: As Zack connects with the kick, a comic-style “BAM!” in black lettering in a gray starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Slowed slightly, Trini front kicks a Putty who is just off-camera to our left.

Reversion: As Trini connects with the kick, a comic-style “POW!” in yellow lettering in a dark yellow starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Close on Bulk’s blue jeans as they are sprayed, causing them to dissolve away.

Reversion: As Bulk’s blue jeans dissolve, a comic-style “Oops!” in pink lettering on a semi-transparent blue blob shape appears in the middle of the screen, with the letters then individually dripping downward off-screen after the blob disappears.

Skull’s attempt to punch Zack results in Skull’s fist caught in Zack’s hand, who holds on as Skull attempts to retract and then extend arm again.

Reversion: As Skull’s fist connects with Zack’s open hand, a comic-style “Snap!” in gray lettering in a dark gray starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Bulk throws a wild right punch as Jason ducks underneath.

Reversion: As Bulk throws the punch, a comic-style “DUCK!” appears on-screen, and then leans forward as Jason ducks.

Billy flips Bulk overhead. Bulk lands on and crushes some cardboard boxes on a push cart, writhing somewhat.

Reversion: As Bulk is flipped over, an upside down comic-style “FLIP!” appears on screen and flips to correct itself, then falls off-screen as Bulk lands.

Kimberly walks out of camera view just before the doors to the Funky Fashion Maker open, revealing Bulk and Skull dressed in women’s clothing. They each catch view of the other and their outfit, then scream, before stepping out of the machine, freezing when they realize everyone can see them.

Reversion: As Bulk and Skull scream, green and pink light effects from above screen begin to rock back-and-forth. Frozen in-place Bulk & Skull are roughly cut-out from the black background with pink diagonal lines and a kiss-mark, with flashbulbs flashing. Runs thirty frames longer.

Willy trapped inside a spinning gyroscope inside Eye Guy’s mist-filled, internal vortex dimension.

Reversion: Ends 78 frames early.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Zoom out from Blue Ranger, as all five Rangers pose.

Red Ranger drops back down from the air with Power Blaster in his hand. After Red Ranger lands, the other four Rangers join his side, each grabbing onto the Power Blaster or touching another’s shoulders.

Having been knocked into a ditch, Blue Ranger recovers first, followed by Red Ranger talking to him, then zoom in on Blue Ranger’s helmet. Establishment shot of Command Center exterior.

Before the break, a bumper focusing on the Red Ranger: three frames with roughly painted black outlines show Jason demonstrating his bo staff during Hobby Week and breaking boards with his fist. Slight zoom out to reveal a cut-out Red Ranger as text is typed on screen - Red Ranger. Weapons: Blade Blaster, Power Sword. Zord: Tyrannosaurus.

Tyrannosaurus Dinozord’s head slowly rises from the molten red ground. Tyrannosaurus Dinozord rises up above flames and smoke, facing us.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Red Ranger Tyrannosaurus!”.

Mastodon Dinozord surfaces from its icy domain. Mastodon exhales its icy breath. Close-on Mastodon Dinozord’s walking feet. Mastodon stomps along the snowy surface.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Black Ranger Mastodon!”.

Triceratops Dinozord appears within the sands of the desert. Triceratops’s wheels pass through the desert sands. Triceratops raises its head and opens mouth while driving through the dusty desert.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Blue Ranger Triceratops!”.

Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord sprints through the jungle. Sabertooth Tiger opens its mouth in a close up. Sabertooth Tiger leaps out of the greenery.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Yellow Ranger Sabertooth Tiger!”.

A volcano erupts. Pterodactyl Dinozord soars upwards amid lava lights. Pterodactyl Dinozord flies out of the smoking volcano and disturbs trees as it reaches them.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Pink Ranger Pterodactyl!”.

As the teens react to Bulk & Skull (off-screen), Kimberly suggests something as she and Trini motion to each other and then proceed off-screen. Medium on Bulk & Skull, wrapped in towels, reacting with approval, then proceeding off-screen. The doors to the Funky Fashion Maker open as Trini walks up and she removes shrunken versions of the clothes Bulk & Skull were wearing earlier, Kimberly taking and handing Skull his and Trini handing Bulk his. Close on Bulk & Skull holding the outfits. Shot of Billy, Jason, Willy, and Zack reacting.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.

Bulk looks up slowly and to his left as Skull shakes his now much-smaller bandana.
