Revisiting “Foul Play in the Sky”

Today on Power Rangers:

In the Youth Center Gym area, Angela begins to hulahoop with two hulahoops.

Reversion: A comic-style “Sweetheart” overlays the lower middle part of the screen, throbbing, as red hearts fly out and float upward.

Watching Angela just off-screen, Zack’s smile slowly shrinks.

Reversion: A red heart flies up from the bottom of the screen, stopping over Zack’s chest, before tearing in half as blue tear droplets fly out out of Zack’s eyes.

Close on Uncle Steve’s airplane, with a can of cola on the nose. Squatt appears via flashy blue teleportation and uncorks a bottle of green liquid before reaching for the can of cola. Close on Squatt’s hand as he pours all of the green liquid into the can of cola. Close on Squatt as he looks back and forth before teleporting away.

Reversion: Scene is removed in its entirety.

Close on Kimberly (in Uncle Steve’s flying airplane), looking out the window. Trini, Jason, Kimberly, Billy, and Zack walk down a mountain path. Rita fires her magic wand at screen, near statue. Five teens walk along in desert when explosion bursts behind and to the left of them. Smoke behind them, Jason and Zack react to attack. Billy helps Trini up as Putty headstands and backflips over rock behind them. High angle of five teens surrounded by Putties. Pan across from Putty jumping down off a cliff, to Billy and Trini surrounded by three of them. With Jason behind him and a Putty to the side, Zack shouts a warning. Kimberly backs up and looks both ways in fear. Zoom out from Red Ranger’s helmet as all five Rangers pose with Power Weapons in desert in slow motion. Pair of confused Putties cease looking at each other, then the left one scratches head. Close on Kimberly (in Uncle Steve’s flying airplane), still looking out the window.

Reversion: First shot of Kimberly quickly fades to full-screen cloud effect which wipes right to reveal slightly clouded flashback scene of teens in cloudy border. All flashback scenes are slightly clouded in cloudy border. Shot of confused Putties transitions via closing iris effect to full-screen cloud effect before fading to shot of Kimberly.

Close on Uncle Steve, who raises sunglasses and rubs eyes, with Kimberly looking on concerned, questioning as Uncle Steve lowers sunglasses. Switch to opposite view as Uncle Steve answers and begins ruffling shirt attempting to cool self.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted. Both scenes repeated - camera fades to black in to commercial break near end of first scene and camera fades from black out of commercial break near start of first scene.

In the back of Uncle Steve’s flying airplane, Bulk turns to Skull, questions concernedly, Skull responds with a reassuring tone and then they both look forward for a beat, before turning back towards each other, and then screaming.

Reversion: Black waving stripes are added in the background as the pair screams, with a red overlay spotlight moving side-to-side repeatedly.

Looking at each other, Bulk and Skull scream again, Skull resting his head on Bulk’s shoulder as they both are near tears.

Reversion: Black waving stripes are added in the background, with a blue overlay spotlight moving side-to-side repeatedly.

Snizzard emerges from a cloud of smoke, waving arms about before raising them to eye-level. Uncle Steve’s airplane flies over Angel Grove.

Original: Camera fades to black in to commercial break at end of first scene. Camera fades from black out of commercial break at start of second scene.

Reversion: Commercial break removed. First scene’s fading to black fades into second scene’s fading from black.

In the back of Uncle Steve’s flying airplane, Bulk and Skull begin to scream.

In the back of Uncle Steve’s flying airplane, Bulk and Skull are asleep, Bulk moving head and opening and closing mouth contentedly.

Reversion: Three animated sheep run across the top of the screen from right-to-left.

Downward angle on Alpha pressing console button twice with right hand, then leaning down to look at buttons, talking, leaning back up and jerking arms up and down worriedly.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted, starting fourty frames before end of scene. Before the break, a bumper focusing on the Pink Ranger: four black-outlined frames show Kimberly running down the airport runway, close-on Kimberly shouting “It’s Morphin Time!” at the camera, the Pink Ranger shooting the Power Bow and fighting Putties, and the Pink Ranger posing with Power Bow, all in front of a pink background with Pink Ranger and Pterodactyl shape as text is typed on screen - Pink Ranger. Weapons: Power Bow, Blade Blaster. Armor: Pink. Zord: Pterodactyl Dinozord. A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Red, Black, Blue, and Yellow Rangers flip over the camera at alternating angles.

Reversion: A five-dinosaur “tribal coin” shape appears in the background, changing colors to match as each Ranger flips over it.

Sharp zoom out from Red Ranger’s feet as the four Rangers land behind Snizzard, who turns around to face them as they do the same.

Reversion: After the Rangers land, slightly colored-to-match black-and-white Power Coin shapes shoot up and rest above their respective Ranger.

Snizzard rushes at our heroes, slashing sparkily Yellow, Blue, then Black Rangers, finally ducking under Red Ranger’s kick.

Reversion: A comic-style “POW!” in yellow lettering in a brown starburst grows, spins, and then shrinks as Snizzard strikes Yellow Ranger. A comic-style “BIFF!” in pink lettering in a purple starburst grows, spins, and then shrinks as Snizzard strikes Blue Ranger. A comic-style “BAM!” in black lettering in a gray starburst grows, spins, and then shrinks as Snizzard strikes Black Ranger.

As he ducks in close up, Snizzard whips up tail. Red Ranger gets sparkily slashed in chest by Snizzard’s tail in close up, sending him flying off.

Reversion: As he ducks, a comic-style “ZZZZING” moves left-to-right across screen, following Snizzard’s tail. From the other side, the mirror-flipped “ZZZZING” follows Snizzard’s tail as it strikes the Red Ranger.
