For Whom the Bell Trolls

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Slow zoom-in close-up on Mr. Ticklesneezer doll. Stock footage shot of the lunar surface.

Reversion: Second scene is removed in its entirety and replaced with closest frame of Mr. Ticklesneezer doll cut-out from background with concentric-circle flame effect in background and in doll’s eyes.

Fade from black out of commercial break to slow zoom in on Ms. Appleby at front of classroom, talking, then pointing to her right and selecting Jason (off-screen) to go first. Quickly spinning frame grows from center of screen to reveal Jason at front of classroom, demonstrating bo staff. Medium on Ms. Appleby off to the side of the classroom, holding up left hand slightly and looking concerned, but then turns to face class, smiling slightly to hide it. Jason continues to twirl his bo staff rapidly back and forth.

Reversion: Transition from first scene to second scene cut (26 frames cut, including seven frames pre-transition). Second and third scene removed in their entirety (159 frames cut). First frame cut from fourth scene.

Bulk, having nearly fallen onto Billy’s volcano, is hit in the face with the volcano’s eruption of pink lava.

Reversion: A comic-style “SPLOOSH!” in pink lettering grows from over the eruption, shaking slightly.

With his left hand on Bulk’s chin, Skull pulls out a handerchief, touches it to tongue, and begins to wipe lava off of Bulk’s face. Bulk reacts by spraying the lava that is in his mouth in Skull’s face, before grabbing both of Skull’s arms and throwing them downward.

Reversion: A comic-style “Spit!” in pink lettering appears and bounces around in the middle of the screen as Bulk spits, before shrinking away.

Close on chocolate cake on metal cake stand, quickly smashed by Bulk’s downward chop.

Reversion: As Bulk connects, a comic-style “Krak?” in pink lettering grows and shakes in the middle of the screen.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Zoom out from Red Ranger fighting three Putties atop a yellow train. Then pan over to Pink flipping into battle against two of them.

Reversion: As the Red Ranger connects with a high-kick on a Putty, a comic-style “KICK!” in red-lettering appears over the kick and shakes before shrinking away. As Kimberly flips on to the scene, a comic-style “Zip!” in pink lettering similarly flips in before sliding leftward off-screen.

A Putty rushes by Black Ranger, he hits another and knocks it over the side, then flips off the train when that first one tries to hit him.

Reversion: As Zack taps a Putty on the back causing it to fall off the train car, a comic-style “BOP!” in gray lettering in a dark gray starburst grows, spins, and then shrinks away.

Pink Ranger jumps up, snatches bottle in midair, and drops down.

Reversion: As Pink Ranger catches the bottle, she is roughly cut-out from the pink-tinted background in front of a giant pink heart and numerous smaller red hearts.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Zoom out from Blue Ranger’s helmet as Blue & Yellow Ranger pose atop train car with Bladeblasters, before leaping off together.

Reversion: At the beginning of the leap, scene is paused with Blue & Yellow Ranger superimposed on a spinning blue radial background superimposed on the rest of the scene with white stars on either side of Blue Ranger and three curved, downward pointing arrows around Yellow Ranger.

Winged Goldar lands and turns around as Baboo & Squatt join him, all three then leaping up and vanishing.

Reversion: Raining clouds appear at the top of the frame as Goldar lands. After he turns, his eyes are lit-up red. As the three leap and disappear, a purple lightning bolt crashes on the left-side of the frame.

Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord sprints through the jungle. Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord opens its mouth in a close up. Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord leaps out of the greenery.

A volcano erupts. Different angle on volcano spewing upward magma and smoke. Pterodactyl Dinozord soars upwards amid lava lights. Pterodactyl Dinozord flies straight up out of now-active volcano. Pterodactyl Dinozord raises and lowers head while continuing to fly amid molten lava lights. Pterodactyl Dinozord flies out of the smoking volcano and disturbs trees as it reaches them.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Pink Ranger Pterodactyl!”.

Megazord Tank Mode rolls along, locked up against camera, as eyes of all five Zords light up.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Megazord Tank Mode!”. Megazord Tank Mode is cut-out with flashing Ranger-colored beams emitted from upper right corner of frame, entire frame with grainy overlay. Runs thirty frames longer.

At the front of the classroom, Bulk & Skull are showing off their flea circus, Bulk looking down, realizing and then saying that the fleas are missing, causing Skull to pause and look down also. Close-on the flea-less flea circus. Shot of Billy as he leans in, looking for the fleas. Bulk, then Skull, look to their right. Shot of teens in the classroom, looking to their left.
