Happy Birthday, Zack

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Original: Camera fades to black in to commercial break

Reversion: Before fade to black begins, slight zoom in on Rita as she stands by fire and holds up Magic Wand, peering through center while casting spell. Camera zooms out from outlined frame to show it as if part of an old-fashioned storybook. Camera pans right to frame with zoom out from eyes as Knasty Knight poses with sword, shot freezing at end with Knasty Knight roughly cut out from background with textured, rising flames. Camera pans right to frame of Black Ranger jumping through the air, pulling Power Axe over head with both hands and spreading legs out, shot freezing at end with Black Ranger cut out from background with textured black radial starburst. Camera pans right to frame of Knasty Knight leaping up and at camera with sword drawn, shot freezing at end with Knasty Knight cut out from purple background with exploding smoke/dust cloud emerging from behind. Entire shot catches fire from center and burns away to black in to commercial break.

As Jason speaks in the left foreground, back-to-camera, Ernie listens intently while standing behind Youth Center Juice Bar, first nodding and then shaking head, then talking briefly before turning and walking away. Shot of Jason and Billy at Juice Bar, turning to each other and laughing. Shot of Kimberly shaking head briefly in disbelief, turning head to right then back, all while tying a balloon. Still smiling, Jason turns away from Billy as both walk away from the Juice Bar.

Reversion: Last frame of first shot cut. Second, third, and fourth shots cut in their entirety.

Holding each other’s hands, Skull talks to Trini as she slowly walks him backwards, Skull finally bumping into table holding buckets of paint and falling onto it, causing it to collapse and him to fall down.

Reversion: A comic-style “Crash!” in red-lettering appears as Skull completes his fall, shakes a little, and then falls off-screen, letter-by-letter.

Bulk runs almost face-first into a support pole.

Reversion: A comic-style “KLANG!” in yellow-lettering and a yellow starbust appears as Bulk hits the pole, the starburst quickly shrinking away.

Bulk falls backward into a large open box full of inflated balloons.

Reversion: Seven comic-style “POP!”’s in assorted colored starbursts grow and shrink away sequentially as Bulk falls.

Getting up off of the collapsed table, a now enraged Skull stands up and rushes forward and to our right, off-screen.

Reversion: After standing up, shot freezes briefly with background fading to black with light streaks as horizontal red laser beam rises to top third of screen revealing text, “Eugene "Skull" Skullovitch” and “Weapons: Whiny Laugh, Zord: Mega Bootlicker”.

Billy quickly opens the door to his blue cake mix-filled Cake-O-Matic just before Skull runs head-first into it.

Reversion: A comic-style “SPLOOSH!” in blue lettering in a blue bubble starburst grows and shrinks away over the middle of the screen.

Rita smiles and laughes maniacally, then fades away atop cliff. As Alpha works diligently on console, Zordon talks, shifting head right and left.

Reversion: Commercial break inserted between two scenes.

Red Ranger comes into view, raises left fist, then holds up Bladeblaster against left forearm, sharp zoom out to show fellow Rangers copying him as they hold their Bladeblasters outward with right hands.

Reversion: Scene freezes on last frame with Rangers and the ground cut out from background with moving white-dotted sky with green curves moving about. Runs an additional 60 frames.

Tyrannosaurus Dinozord’s head slowly rises from the molten red ground. Close up of Tyrannosaurus Dinozord’s hands as it rises up. Tyrannosaurus Dinozord rises up above flames and smoke, facing us.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Red Ranger Tyrannosaurus!”.

Mastodon Dinozord surfaces from its icy domain. Mastodon exhales its icy breath.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Black Ranger Mastodon!”.

Triceratops Dinozord appears within the sands of the desert. Triceratops raises its head and opens mouth while driving through the dusty desert.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Blue Ranger Triceratops!”.

Reversion: Comic-style narration box slides in on lower left, reading “Pink Ranger Pterodactyl!”. Last frame missing narration box.

Megazord Tank Mode folds up into body of the standing Megazord. Pterodactyl soars downward.

Reversion: Multiple white beams emerge from center behind the now-standing Megazord and rotate clockwise as a static fireball rises from bottom-to-top in front of a yellow, roughly-painted surface. First shot runs twenty-five frames longer. Second shot runs five frames longer.

At a party at the Youth Center, Zack dances and twirls. Jason also dances and twirls. Wide shot showing the entire dance. Medium on guitar player. Shot of teens dancing. Medium on drummer. Kimberly dances, looking up. Billy and Ernie struggle with the overflowing Cake-O-Matic. Pan up from feet of Jason and Kimberly dancing together. Medium on Zack showing off his moves, surrounded by others. Billy and Ernie continue to struggle with the overflowing Cake-O-Matic.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.
