Green with Evil Part III

Revisiting Power Rangers visually compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Slowed, close on Scorpina’s left hand, unclenching it and showing off claw-like glove.

Reversion: A golden ring of light pulses outward from behind Scorpina’s hand.

Close on Scorpina’s head, looking to our right.

Reversion: With a slowly growing striped radial gradient behind her, frame crops to a slant on her face.

Scorpina stands in front of blue sky-wall, holding out left arm and posing. Fades to shot of Rita with her back to us, standing at the balcony railing facing the Earth and thrusting both arms twice, punching with right, then thrusting arms again.

Reversion: Light whisps wrap around Scorpina, four yellow polygons growing upward from the ground behind her. Fade to next shot pushed back slightly.

Low-to-the-ground shot of the right side of Jason’s face as he lays on the ground, Goldar’s sword stabbing into the ground from above mere inches away.

Reversion: As the sword stabs into the ground, a comic-style “Slice” overlays the sword and two pairs of comic-style kanji characters (スラ and イス) appear on either side.

As Goldar’s sword stabs into the ground, the camera pans up to show Goldar looking around before stabbing downard again, then looking around again, before the camera pans right and focuses on Jason as he stands up, yelling and posing ready to fight.

Reversion: A red energy effect surrounds Jason as he yells.

Camera zooms in as Jason poses, determined.

Reversion: Concentric circles and a single red firework explode outward behind Jason as a stylized red Tyrannosaurus Power Coin spins and glows into position in the upper left of the frame.

With the camera panning to follow, closed-eyes Skull moves to our left to kiss Kimberly, but she quickly gets out of the way; Bulk slowly comes into frame, pointing and smiling at Skull, as Skull plants a kiss on his cheek, shocking and disturbing them both.

Reversion: As Skull kisses Bulk’s cheek, a comic-style “SMOOCH” appears on the screen, streching about, followed by a red kiss-mark.

Zack and Kimberly run down a path toward the camera, Kimberly grabbing Zack’s arm to stop him and then pointing upward. Trio of Putties flip over the camera at alternating angles. Flying Putty brings two feet together and kicks outward. Zack and Kimberly lower their gaze as the Putties land off-screen. Camera zooms out as five Putties land on a picnic table.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted at end. Putties are cut out from background in slanted frame with a purple striped radial gradient, Putties slowly growing toward camera. Camera fades to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: At the end of the inserted commercial break, a stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle and form the 2010 MMPR logo at the top of the screen, followed by individual comic-style letters sliding and fading in to form “DANCE OFF” at the bottom. Split-screen of Billy posing on the ground in the Youth Center gym and Zack posing while demonstrating Hip Hop Kido, with stylized “Billy”, “vs”, and “ZACK” overlayed on the screen. A comic-style “BEGIN!” grows over a black background. Fade to footage of Billy dancing from A Different Drum. A comic-style “ZACK BEGIN!” grows over a black background. Fade to footage of Zack demonstrating Hip Hop Kido for his students from (the not yet aired) Itsy Bitsy Spider. Scene fades to black, over which a comic-style “WINNER:” fades in above a still of Zack posing while demonstrating Hip Hop Kido with comic-style “Zack” overlayed. Finally, the initial Dance Off card is repeated. Runs for over fifty-eight seconds in total.

Reversion: After the commercial break, repeated scenes from before the commercial break: Zack and Kimberly run down a path toward the camera, Kimberly grabbing Zack’s arm to stop him and then pointing upward. Trio of Putties flip over the camera at alternating angles. Flying Putty brings two feet together and kicks outward. Zack and Kimberly lower their gaze as the Putties land off-screen. Camera zooms out as five Putties land on a picnic table.

Zoom out as a Putty lands on a picnic table and grabs at Kimberly’s shoulder, causing her to spin around, grab its arm, climb up on the bench, and kick it in the rear, sending it flying off to the right. Camera pans along to the right to show Zack get kicked in the chest by a flying Putty, causing him to stumble backwards, then zoom in as he poses ready as Putties scurry about.

Reversion: As Kimberly kicks the Putty, a pink comic-style “WOOSH!” and kanji characters (ンーレ) appear and follow along as the Putty flies, finally exiting the frame on the right. As the Putty kicks Zack, a white comic-style “WHAM!” and kanji characters (ワム) fly in, shake a little, and then drop away.

Standing on a picnic table, Kimberly kicks away an approaching Putty before posing as the camera zooms in.

Reversion: At the end of the shot, a stylized pink Pterodactyl Power Coin grows and glows from the center left of the frame.

Standing atop a picnic table, Zack spins around, then sits down on the table, blocking and trapping a Putty’s outstretched arm before standing up, punching it in the chest, kicking it, and tossing it away, and then spinning around again back to the top of the table, posing.

Reversion: At the end of the shot, a stylized black Mastodon Power Coin spins and glows into position in the upper right of the now-slanted frame.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Red Ranger free falls away from a skyscraper.

Reversion: White flash added at beginning (recycled from A Pressing Engagement). At conclusion, scene freezes and six red beams emerge from lower right over the screen as a phantom Tyrannosaurus Dinozord rises straight up on the left half of the screen amid smoke. Runs 31 frames longer.

Black Ranger free falls from the sky in city.

Original: Last frame is a blended frame of the last frame of this shot and the first frame of the next shot.

Reversion: Near conclusion, scene freezes and five gray beams emerge from lower left over the screen as a phantom Mastodon Dinozord stomps along on the right half of the screen. Runs 25 frames longer.

Blue Ranger free falls beside office building.

Reversion: At conclusion, scene freezes and six black beams emerge from upper center over the screen as a blue striped star shape spins behind the Blue Ranger and a phantom Triceratops Dinozord roars in the back of the frame. Runs 30 frames longer.

Yellow Ranger free falls toward office building.

Reversion: At conclusion, scene freezes and multiple black beams emerge from right over the screen with two arrows shooting out of either side of Yellow Ranger, three arrow folding into view on lower left corner of screen, all as a phantom Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord runs in the back of the frame. Runs 30 frames longer.

Pink Ranger free falls near office building.

Reversion: At conclusion, scene freezes as multiple blue beams emerge from center pink hearts behind Pink Ranger and rotate clockwise as a phantom Pterodactyl Dinozord soars downward on the right half of the screen. Runs 34 frames longer.

Camera fades from black out of commercial break. Green Ranger practices martial arts in the Dark Dimension.

Reversion: Before returning from break, a bumper focusing on the Black Ranger: With roughly cut-out Black Ranger in lower-right, three outlined frames fly in on the upper-right, show the Black Ranger readying his Power Axe, spreading legs outward as he flies through the air with Power Axe, and flipping a Putty over onto its back. Text is typed on screen - Black Ranger. Weapons: Blade Blaster, Power Axe. Zord: Mastodon Dinozord.

In Viewing Globe, giant Goldar walks into city and stops, zoom out as he puts left hand to eyes and releases bolts of fire energy into streets, causing sparking flash; after scene clears of smoke and sparks, he turns and blasts the buildings behind him just the same. Building bursts with sparks and falls apart as fireball erupts within it in slow motion.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro. After Goldar turns after smoke clears, remainder of the shot is cut. Second shot is cut in its entirety. 116 total frames cut.

Five teens finish walking up to the Viewing Globe. Over the shoulder shot of Alpha 5 and the five teens watching the Viewing Globe, Alpha lowering raised arms and tilting head to the side. As front section of building ceases sparking and smoking, giant Goldar turns and blasts the buildings behind him. Establishment shot of the Command Center. Over the shoulder shot of Alpha 5 and the five teens continuing to watch the Viewing Globe.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame.

Five teens react to what they’re seeing on the Viewing Globe, Jason turning his head to the left and speaking. Freeze frame.

Original: After freeze frame, “TO BE CONTINUED...” fades in and out over bottom of frame followed by Executive Producers credit fading in over bottom of frame. Fade to black at end.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. Before credits end, “To Be Continued” fades in over middle of frame. After freeze frame, teens are roughly outlined in Ranger-colored lines as stylized gray “tribal” Power Coin fades in in the background, before cracking down the middle and breaking apart.
