Itsy Bitsy Spider

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Close side angle view on Zack, who turns his head to see a tarantula slowly crawling up his right shoulder, causing him to freak out.

Reversion: As the tarantula crawls into view, the frame takes on a brown tint and multiple spider shapes crawl up and down on each side of the frame.

Close on Zack’s shoulder as the tarantula jumps off and Tommy forcefully slams his binder down.

Reversion: A comic-style “SLAM!” in red lettering grows and turns slightly in the middle of the shot.

Upward angle of statue, Putties gather around it and toss a large cloth over it.

Reversion: Brightness increased, making shot much more discernable.

Close up of Rita, looking to our right on balcony, holding her right up arm, smiling as she talks, then laughs widely. Slow pan as the four teens walk toward the camera in the forest.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted between shots - camera fades to black in to commercial break and from black out of commercial break.

Five Putties drop in to the grassy area as camera zooms out from feet.

Reversion: White vertical lines at the bottom of the screen slide down as the Putties, with a strange glowing effect, drop in.

Trini blocks a Putty’s right arm, then left, then shoves it in the chest with both hands.

Reversion: As Trini connects, a comic-style “OOF!” in red-outlined yellow lettering grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Jason kicks a Putty in the back, causing it to stumble away, and then kicks another approaching Putty in the gut.

Reversion: As Jason kicks the first Putty, a comic-style “Snap!” in dark red lettering in a red starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

With Billy holding a butterfly net over the head of a Putty, the two spin around in a circle until Billy releases the net, causing both to stumble off.

Reversion: White lines are emitted from the Putty’s head while in the net. A comic-style “YOINK!” in blue lettering drops down from above but then is caught up in the spinning and sent upward again when the Putty is released. When the Putty is released, a dizzy blur effect covers its head.

The released Putty falls down and rolls on the ground.

Original: Final frame has a noticeable horizontal scratch.

Reversion: Dizzy blur effect continues to cover the Putty’s head. Final frame is removed.

Trini, Kimberly, Jason, and Billy regroup after the Putty attack. Scene transitions to Zack beginning a demonstration of Hip Hop Kido.

Original: Scene transitions via horizontal lines moving bottom-to-top across the frame.

Reversion: Scene transitions via a combination of horizontal lines moving bottom-to-top across the frame and the frame itself shifting downward, up-and-to-the-right and then left. As Zack demonstrates, bright lights follows both of his hands.

Zack continues to demonstrate Hip Hop Kido.

Reversion: Saturation of shot is increased in addition to a fantasy-like glow.

Reversion: A white wisp follows Zack’s right fist, including making a Z-shape. A purple dust effect begins moving upward as Zack moves his feet. Shot is slowed by 25%.

Reversion: Saturation of blue background is increased, creating a white halo around trees in the distance. A chain of fireballs follows Zack’s right foot as he performs a tornado kick. Last fourteen frames are cut.

Reversion: Shot freezees briefly while Zack does a midair split kick, with Zack cut out from the background with rotating blue stripes.

Reversion: Shot freezes briefly at completion of segment featured in the original opening credits, with Zack gaining a white glow and growing slowly toward the camera. Last 31 frames are cut, cutting a punch toward the camera.

Zack finishes his Hip Hop Kido demonstration by posing, then stands up straight and bows.

Reversion: First nine frames are cut, cutting the pre-posing.

As the kids practice their Hip Hop Kido, some white moths fly about.

Reversion: A brown dust effect begins moving upward as the kids move about.

Zack runs through the park, looking back over his shoulder as the moths pursue.

Original: At end of shot, camera fades to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: Shot begins in outlined framed on brown polka-dot background. Moths emit a black blotch effect. Before fade to black can begin, shot freezes and camera zooms in on Zack. Frame rotates to reveal earlier shot of Zack demonstrating Hip Hop Kido, with a different effect when he does a high kick. Frame rotates to reveal future shot of smoke beginning to clear where statue once was, revealing Spidertron. Frame rotates to reveal earlier shot with kids practicing Hip Hop Kido amonst moths. Frame rotates to reveal future shot of Zack readying and aiming Power Axe.

Zoom out as Black Ranger cocks Power Axe in cannon mode and aims it upward.

Reversion: Before Black Ranger cocks the Power Axe, a jaggedly cut-out-from-the-background Black Ranger rises up from below and grows toward the camera as a gray brick wall drops in behind from above, blowing apart with a yellow starburst just before Black Ranger turns to aim.

Statue is struck with multiple lasers, one decapitating it, then the rest blowing up its body.

Original: Laser blasts are a faint purple.

Reversion: Laser blasts are white with a large black outline. Each piece of debris is also highlighted in the same manner.

The smoke clears and squatting on the pedestal in place of the statue is Spidertron, which slowly stands up.

Reversion: Just as the smoke begins to clear, a jaggedly cut-out-from-the-background Spidertron appears on screen in front of a red and flamey background, before shrinking away as the original Spidertron stands up.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Red, Yellow, Blue, and Pink Rangers flip over the camera.

Reversion: A five-dinosaur “tribal coin” shape appears in the background, changing colors to match as each Ranger flips over it.

Black Ranger leaps up and at the camera, right leg bent and ready to punch forth.

Reversion: Before he reaches his zenith, a stylelized white Mastodon Power Coin with a spinning fire effect drops in from above and a stationary Black Ranger shape rises from below, pauses, and then flies toward the camera.

Crack in the ground spreads open, releasing a fireball, shown from within the crack. Tyrannosaurus Dinozord’s head slowly rises from the molten red ground. Close up of Tyrannosaurus Dinozord’s hands as it rises up.

Triceratops Dinozord appears within the sands of the desert. Triceratops Dinozord’s wheels pass through the desert sands. Triceratops Dinozord raises its head and opens mouth while driving through the dusty desert.

Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord sprints through the jungle. Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord opens its mouth in a close up. Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord leaps out of the greenery.

Water starts to churn in Angel Grove Bay, bubbling up furiously. Closer on the bubbling waters, as the head of the Dragonzord rises from beneath the waves.

Reversion: Updated green comic-style narration box with stylized Dragonzord Power Coin slides in on lower left, reading “Green Ranger Dragonzord!”.

Dragonzord walks toward the stationary camera near tree, which pans up a little, then down to its approaching feet.

Reversion: A comic-style “DRAGONZORD!” in green-outlined black lettering is present in the middle of the frame, tracking with the camera, and finally shattering as Dragonzord walks on through.

Sabertooth Tiger and Triceratops Dinozords fold up into legs as Dragonzord & Mastodon Dinozord parts lower, connecting into body as Tail Staff drops, blue lightning flashing behind.

Close on Tommy and Zack as the latter speaks, Tommy finally putting his hand on Zack’s shoulder and depositing a plastic spider, telling Zack there’s a spider on his shoulder, and Zack reacting in disbelief. Shot of Trini, Billy, Jason, and Kimberly lightly laughing.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.

Still disbelieving Zack turns to look at his shoulder, does a slight double-take, and begins to spin.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. As Zack turns to look at his shoulder, he is cut out from the background which has now gained a spider web pattern.

As Trini, Billy, Jason, and Kimberly look on, Zack rushes into frame, spinning about and then swatting, trying to get rid of the spider.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame.

Long shot of the six teens, Zack still cowering from the spider on his shoulder, which Tommy picks off and then shows to Zack, pointing out that its fake. Zack pushes it away, gently elbows at Tommy, Tommy speaks, then they all laugh as Zack knows Tommy got him. Freeze frame. Fade to black.

Original: After freeze frame, Executive Producers credit fades in over center of frame.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. After freeze frame, Zack is cut-out from an otherwise de-saturated background as three spider shapes dangle into view from the top.
