Life’s a Masquerade

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

As Skull hits a staple gun against his forehead, Bulk tugs on a stuck string of gold garland, finally giving it a yank. Close on the legs of a chair as it begins to tip over as the garland underneath a leg is freed.

Reversion: A comic-style “YANK!” in pink lettering grows over the center of the screen as Bulk does so, finally stretching up and to the left as the chair tips in that direction.

The aforementioned chair tips over to its right, knocking into its neighboring chair, followed by that chair doing the same to a third.

Reversion: As each chair hits the next, a small comic-style “Bink!” in white lettering appears over the collision.

With mouth agape, a pink bucket containing white paint lands on Bulk’s head.

Reversion: A comic-style “SPLOOSH” in brown lettering in front of rounded starbust grows and shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Emerging from smoke, Frankenstein lumbers forward toward the camera with arms raised before stopping and jerking to its right, back forward, to its left, and back forward again, then growling.

Reversion: As it stops, Frankenstein is hit with electricity from the upper right. Facing right, Frankenstein shoots lightning bolts from its fingers. Facing left, Frankenstein again shoots lightning bolts from its fingers. Once facing forward again, three lightning bolts strike the fingertips of each of Frankenstein’s hands from above. As camera shakes, Rita talks with a left hand gesture, atop her giant clump of Super Putty.

Reversion: Near end of shot, a fiery lightning effect in front of a purple background appears behind Rita as spinning dotted-black and solid-purple radial gradients also appear and spin in the background. Runs an additional fifteen frames.
