Gung Ho!

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Close on the end of the Repulsascope as Rita looks through, blinking a few times then looking out, laughing.

Original: Fade to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: Last second of shot (including fade out) is cut. Shot of Finster rubbing chin and pondering as frame shrinks to reveal blue plaid background, as cartoon thought bubble appears above Finster’s head. Inside thought bubble, five Super Putties land in the park. Pan right to another frame showing a defeated Super Putty reforming into two new Super Putties. Pan right to another frame showing stadium seats as Squatt & Baboo fade in, applauding. Fade to black into commercial break.

With a punching bag to our close left, Bulk & Skull watch as their two ninjas run from the far right and jump and kick the punching bag in unison. The onlooking teens turn to each other with shock.

Reversion: The ninjas are blurred to accentuate their speed. When they connect with the bag, they and the bag are cut out from a now horizontal-line-filled background with white, comic-style impact stars outlined in yellow and green wobbling about. First eight frames of second shot cut.

Bulk is struck by the recoiling punching bag, sending him flying to the ground.

Reversion: A comic-style “POW!” in yellow lettering in a brown starburst grows, spins, and then shrinks over the impact.

Zoom out from their feet as five Putties teleport into the park.

Reversion: As the camera zooms out, comic-style letters spelling “SUPER PUTTIES” fly in near the bottom of the screen. Near the end of the shot, the Putties (all now with a green glow outline) are cut out from the background with a spinning red-and-black radial gradient and grow toward the camera. Runs an additional 47 frames.

Surrounded by Putties, Kimberly is kneeling next to a down Trini and calling out on her Communicator. At the Youth Center Gym, Jason punches a punching bag as Tommy holds it, Zack and Billy looking on.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted. After the first shot, shot of five colored polygons with corresponding Rangers plus a green circle in the middle with Green Ranger. Just as Pink Ranger is about to be shown receiving her Power Bow in the Command Center, the frame shatters and transitions to a bumper focusing on the Pink Ranger: black-outlined frames show the Pink Ranger free falling near an office building and the Pink Ranger posing with Power Bow, all in front of a pink background with Pink Ranger and Pterodactyl shape as text is typed on screen - Pink Ranger. Weapons: Power Bow, Blade Blaster. Armor: Pink. Zord: Pterodactyl Dinozord. [Recycled from The Spit Flower.] Camera fades from black out of commercial to original second shot.

Zack punches a Putty in the face, then flips it over a safety bar, sending it sliding down the slide.

Reversion: A comic-style “FLIP!” in green-outlined brown lettering flips up from the bottom of the screen just prior to the Putty flipping over the bar.

Medium on a Putty approaching the camera as Kimberly’s legs appear from off-screen, dropkicking it to the ground.

Reversion: A comic-style “KICK!” in pink lettering appears briefly as Kimberly connects with the Putty.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Original: Lightning bolt is from 1993 MMPR logo.

Reversion: Lightning bolt is from 2010 MMPR logo.

Three Putties flip down and scramble to pose, then three more materialize flipping, and do the same around the first three.

Reversion: Putties materialize within a red/yellow/purple flame effect.

Pieces of clay come together into a ball, that then forms into a pair of Super Putties.

Reversion: Putty reformation is accompanied by a red/yellow/purply fiery particle effect.

Reversion: Putty reformation is accompanied by a red/yellow/purply fiery particle effect.

Black Ranger rolls away, zoom out as his three teammates regroup around him. He slowly gets back up, points forth, then Yellow gets defensive when a Putty rushes up to the group. Camera fade to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: Arc lines rotate around Black Ranger as he rolls away. Before Black Ranger points, the Rangers (and the ground beneath them) are cut out from a black-and-white checkerboard pattern. As the background quickly zooms in, it begins to melt away, and the Rangers do the same as the camera fades to black, while white vertical lines drop in from above. A total of 67 frames are cut.

Camera fades from black out of commercial break to a circling aerial establishment shot of the mountain.

Reversion: Camera fades from black out of commercial break to a bumper focusing on the Green Ranger: with a cut out Green Ranger in the lower right, a green energy splash reveals a shot of Green Ranger posing in a slanted frame. Another green energy splash reveals a shot of Green Ranger posing at the top of a rock quarry. Another green energy splash reveals giant Green Ranger slashing the Sword of Darkness downward as text is revealed on screen - Green Ranger. Weapons: Dragon Dagger. Zord: Dragonzord. [Recycled from Green with Evil Part V.] Camera fades to original shot.

All four Rangers roll left past group of four bladehand Super Putties, attempt to strike them and fail, only to all get sparkily slashed back at the same time.

Reversion: As the Rangers recoil from the strikes, the shot freezes with the Rangers cut out from the background as a smoke effect grows from the center and four horizontal Ranger-colored bars move left-to-right across the screen. A total of four frames cut from the end.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Original: Lightning bolt is from 1993 MMPR logo.

Reversion: Lightning bolt is from 2010 MMPR logo.

Green and Red Rangers briefly crouch down slightly on the side of a moutain after teleporting in, Red punching Green on the shoulder before beginning to climb.

Reversion: Vertical white lines fall downward from above, stopping at the bottom briefly before falling away.

Leaning on the ropes of the ring, off-screen Ernie hands Tommy the trophy and he and Jason high-five. Bulk comments to Skull that their warriors need water, Skull points and runs off-camera. Skull runs up to the bench next to the ring and picks up a bucket of water, then trips, sending water flying through the air.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.

Bulk is splashed with the water, even spitting some out of his mouth, all as the crowd looks on, laughing.

Reversion: End credits continue to run over bottom half of frame. A comic-style “SPLASH!” in blue lettering flies in diagonally on-screen with the water before levelling out and then shrinking away at center of screen.

Skull feigns regret, as the teens in the background laugh.

Reversion: End credits continue to run over bottom half of frame.

Close on Jason and Tommy still in the ring, laughing uproariously. Freeze frame. Fade to black.

Original: After freeze frame, Executive Producers credit fades in over center of frame.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. After freeze frame, Jason and Tommy gain Ranger-colored glows and are cut out from the background with a blue-and-white rotating radial gradient. Background stops spinning as camera fades to black.
