Wheel of Misfortune

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

As Bulk spins Kimberly’s grandmother’s spinning wheel at increasing speed, the generated gust blows off Mr. Kaplan’s toupee, causing him to raise his hands to his head in shock.

Reversion: As the toupee begins to be blown away, a comic-style “Woosh!” in gray letters slides in from the left and then fades away.

Reversion: Fade in starts later as first forty frames are cut.

In a classroom at Angel Grove High, Goldar and three Putties teleport in, surround Kimberly’s grandmother’s spinning wheel, and teleport away with it.

Reversion: The Putties’ teleportation effect has an added electrical effect.

Warning! The video clip above violates the three-flashes-per-second rule and as a result may cause seizures in those with photosensitive epilepsy.

Over a black backdrop, Kimberly’s grandmother’s spinning wheel spins. Transition to shot of Wheel of Destruction via static, lightning strikes, and white flashes. Transition to next shot via retracting circle of Kimberly sitting on stage at Youth Center Gym with head on right hand, pouting. Other four teens walk into shot and sit down and mimic her, which she soon realizes, smiling somewhat.

Reversion: Fade from black into first shot, spinning wheel surrounded with black over marble background. Wheel of Destruction emits faint blue light beams from tips. Fade to third shot is later and third shot starts cloudy and in black-and-white, slowly transitioning back to full color as Kimberly’s mood improves slightly.

Goldar talking to our left, raising sword and gesturing it about seven times, pointing with his left hand once near the end. Transitions into next shot via diagonal line effect. Pan up from Tommy’s feet as he walks over wooden bridge, stopping, looking around concernedly before looking up, slightly startled.

Reversion: Goldar’s eyes have an additional red glow. As Tommy begins looking around, black lines and a green glow surround his head, indicating a sixth sense, with the glow increasing as he sees the Putties (off-screen).

Tommy lands and poses ready.

Reversion: Near end, shot freezes with Tommy cut out from background as green energy waves flow out. Last eight frames cut. Runs 37 frames longer.

Tommy spins around and kicks a Putty in the gut, then poses ready as the camera quickly zooms in. Two Putties with intertwined hands alternate spinning each other, attempting to kick Tommy.

Reversion: Near end of zoom in, shot becomes slanted an a stylized Dragonzord Power Coin spins across the screen before stopping on the right, glowing briefly. Scene freezes briefly after coin stops. First eleven frames of second shot cut.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination.

Original: Scorpina in monster form rises up while growing amid fading smoke.

The five Rangers roll to our right, get right back up, reach to the skies and summon their Zords.

Reversion: As Rangers roll in to view, first three (Red, Pink, and Black) are followed by Ranger-colored lines (red, pink, and white). As Rangers extend arms, similarly colored light beams extend upward from their hands. Before end of shot, Rangers are cut out from background which now has green, black, and white horizontal lines. The Rangers rotate slightly and shrink to the left as a large, black-and-white stylized “tribal coin” drops in from above on the right, glistening. Last 32 frames cut. Runs thirty frames longer.

Mastodon Dinozord surfaces from its icy domain. Mastodon Dinozord exhales its icy breath. Close on Mastodon Dinozord’s feet as it begins to walk. Mastodon Dinozord stomps along the snowy surface.

Triceratops Dinozord appears within the sands of the desert. Triceratops Dinozord wheels pass through the desert sands. Triceratops Dinozord raises its head and opens mouth while driving through the dusty desert.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted. First shot fades to black in to commercial break before original transition begins. Camera fades from black out of commercial break after original transition ends.

Shot of Bulk & Skull after switching brains from Switching Places. Comic-style writing reading “These hits take the cake... or pie!” overlays the first shot of the scene where Bulk chops a pie from For Whom the Bell Trolls. Audience laughs. Bulk attempts to cover tear in pants with a handful of straw as Skull reacts off stage and Kimberly covers her laughter. Other teens react backstage, as Bulk slowly backs away, left-to-right in front of the camera. Skull, with arm extended pointing and laughing, is pulled on-stage. Bulk picks Skull up. Kimberly, still laughing, turns to her right and stops when she realizes the audience is still watching. Panning shot of laughing audience.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.

Kimberly, now on stage by herself, curtsies. Freeze frame.

Original: After freeze frame, Executive Producers credit fades in over center of frame. Fade to black at end.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. After freeze frame, Kimberly’s grandmother’s spinning wheel is cloned and moves to overlay the center of the shot, wheel spinning. Six Ranger-colored, stylized Power Coins spin in from outside of the frame and attach themselves to the outside of the spinning wheel, which has gained a white glow. Red stylized curtain closes over original shot but behind active spinning wheel.
