Peace, Love and Woe

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Reversion: A comic-style “FLIP!” in pink lettering flips in unison with Kimberly and then drops off-screen as she lands (though remains on-screen for three frames into the second shot).

Ernie, carrying a cake, begins to scurry backwards as Bulk approaches on a skateboard, Ernie falling on to the top step near the Juice Bar as Bulk falls head-first into the cake.

Reversion: As Bulk hits the cake, a comic-style “SPLAT” in yellow lettering in front of a rounded starbust grows and shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Over-Billy’s-shoulder shot of Marge, who finishes turning around and smiles when she sees Billy.

Reversion: Three comic-style heart shapes dance in the background.

As the two knock heads, a comic-style “BONK!” in pink-outlined white writing appears briefly over their heads before quickly fading away, followed by the three hearts.

Billy shyly responds to Marge (off-screen) as his four friends at the Juice Bar behind him try to hide their reactions.

Reversion: Seven frames from the end, shot freezes with Billy cut out from the background, numbers and mathematical symbols scrolling in the background, and two pink hearts flying by horizontally from opposite sides. Runs an additional 22 frames.

Original: Camera fades to black in to commercial break at end.

Reversion: Before fade to black begins, page turn transition to earlier scene of Billy and Marge in the Youth Center entrance way, shot zooming out from outlined frame to show it as if part of an old-fashioned storybook. Camera pans right to frame with zoom in on Madame Woe at her rocky shoreline altar. Camera pans right to frame with future scene of five Rangers holding up their Power Coins overhead and Blue Ranger converting into a ball of light that shoots across the pond in Madame Woe’s dimension. Entire shot catches fire from center and burns away to black in to commercial break.

While Billy struggles to escape a Putty’s grip, another Putty side flips over, awaiting Billy when he finally escapes, kicking him backwards and causing him to fall down on a rock.

Reversion: As the Putty connects with the kick, a comic-style “KICK!” in gray-lettering over a red-outlined blue starbust appears over the kick and then quickly shrinks away.

With Bulk’s extended arm and smelly currency still in Ernie’s face, Ernie stumbles backward and then falls to his left into a cake on a Juice Bar table.
