Dark Warrior

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Bulk & Skull lift up an inverted Billy by the legs and deposit him rear-first into a large blue trash can. Overhead shot of Bulk & Skull dropping Billy into the trash can, Skull patting him on the head.

Reversion: A comic-style “STUFFED!” in white letters grows elastically at the top of the screen before dropping and shrinking into the trash can.

Trini quickly raises up her hand as Bulk & Skull’s heads collide in the middle, pan slight left to Bulk reaching up to his head with hand, dizzily.

Reversion: As their heads collide, a comic-style “BONK!” in blue lettering in a yellow starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen.

Dark Warrior teleports in via a fading purple light, gesturing hand from face and nodding. Camera fades to black in to commercial break.

Reversion: Before fade to black begins, shot freezes with Dark Warrior outlined in blue and white with a blue and white texture in the background. Fades to black. Runs thirty frames longer.

In a field of wild flowers, five Putties teleport in.

Reversion: The teleportation effect has an added electrical effect, including after the usual yellow-outline effect.

Close on six black helium-filled baloons. As one sinks below view, two pop, then two more. Over-Jason’s shoulder shot as the final balloon pops, startling Trini and Billy.

Reversion: Six comic-style “POP!”’s in assorted colored starbursts grow and shrink away sequentially as the balloons pop.

Reversion: Multiple white beams emerge from center behind the now-standing Megazord and rotate clockwise as a static fireball rises from bottom-to-top in front of a yellow, roughly-painted surface.

In Megazord cockpit, all five Rangers raise right arms together, then make slashing downward motions.

Reversion: As the Rangers motion, each Ranger’s hand gains a Ranger-color glow and a circular progress gauge overlay appears on the screen, completing a circle counter-clockwise starting from the 3-o’clock position, glowing brightly on completion.

Camera fades from black out of commercial shot to exterior establishment shot of Youth Center, slow zoom in on sign as two women head inside while a guy holds the door for the first one.

Reversion: Before returning from break, a stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle and form the 2010 MMPR logo at the top of the screen, followed by individual comic-style letters sliding and fading in to form “DANCE OFF” at the bottom.
