Calamity Kimberly

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Side view as Bulk goes flying through the air, left-to-right, in the hallway at Angel Grove High School.

Reversion: A comic-style “TOSS!” in white lettering flies into view along with Bulk, pausing halfway before dropping downward.

Side view as Bulk slides down the hallway, left-to-right, in Angel Grove High School.

Reversion: A comic-style “SLIDE!” slides into view with Bulk, pauses in the middle, before speeding back up to catch up with Bulk.

Bulk continues sliding down the hallway, this time top-to-bottom, stopping after crashing head-first into a tipped over mop bucket.

Reversion: A comic-style “THUNK!” slides into view with Bulk, the letters spreading out and shaking as Bulk collides with the mop bucket.

Close on leaf-covered ground as a hand begins to emerge, pan left to reveal Tommy coming to after the Putty attack, lifting up slightly and holding his head groggily, before lying back down. In the Youth Center Gym, camera pulls out from slowly rotating Jason and Zack, the former deflecting the latter’s continuous punches, Trini comes into view in the foreground, demonstrating part of a kata slowly while talking.

Reversion: Last 21 frames of first shot slowed to extend it and then fade to black into additional inserted commercial break. Camera fades from black out of commercial break to second shot.

A stylized lightning bolt drops in from the top of the screen, causing lightning to crackle once it hits its final destination. Zack shouts “Mastodon!” within Power Morpher.

Reversion: Roughly halfway through shot, rotating Rangers are cut out from now rotating blue-and-black background with yellow specks with an additional rotating texture growing from below. Last thirty frames cut, eliminating charging forth. Runs an additional 61 frames.

Black & Red Rangers are thrown over the camera, floating backwards through the air.

Reversion: Six white beams of light extend from a far-off point and somewhat lead the Rangers off-screen, the Rangers themselves leaving behind a three-pronged blue-and-yellow energy trail.

Reversion: Eight blue-and-yellow energy trails fly in from off-screen, following the Rangers through the air.

Runs an additional sixty frames, where Green Ranger grows toward the camera and the background digitizes away to black.

Water starts to churn in Angel Grove Bay, bubbling up furiously. Close on bubbling water, as the head of the Dragonzord rises from beneath the waves.

In the driveway, Billy is cleaning off tools as Kimberly walks by and into the garage. In the garage, Jason, Tommy, Zack, and Trini watch the news on TV, Tommy turning and double-taking as Kimberly walks up. Closer on Tommy and Kimberly, the latter asking if the news is about them. Shot of Billy in the driveway, asking for the volume to be increased. Close on Tommy and Kimberly, the latter reaching for the remote while Tommy comments that her day must have gotten better, Kimberly asking if it could have gotten any worse.

Reversion: End credits run over bottom half of frame during final scenes of the episode, rather than the :30 second outro.

Long shot of the five teens in the garage, Billy running up just as Kimberly presses a button on the remote, causing the television to sparkburst and the others to respond in the affirmative, with Billy taking the remote control away. Freeze frame.

Original: After freeze frame, Executive Producers credit fades in over center of frame. Fade to black at end.

Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. After freeze frame, animated spark effects begin to shoot out of the television, followed by smoke and a small fire, causing the frame itself to spider crack and then crumble away to black.
