A Star is Born

Revisiting Power Rangers compares, frame-by-frame, the original airings of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (which ran on Fox Kids in 1993) with the reversioned airings (which ran on ABC Kids in 2010), seeking to document any striking visual differences between the two.

For the most part, it is left to the fan to form their own personal opinions on this reversioning.

Today on Power Rangers:

Reversion: A comic-style “FLIP!” in green lettering follows Tommy’s flip.

Reversion: Before fade-to-black begins, shot fades to five colored polygons with corresponding Rangers plus a green circle in the middle with Green Ranger. Arriving on the beach with Skull trailing behind him carrying various objects, Bulk is struck in the chest with an errant beach ball, causing him to stagger and then collapse backwards into Skull and then to the ground.

Reversion: As Bulk is hit in the chest, a comic-style “BONK!” in white lettering in a black starburst grows and then shrinks in the middle of the screen. As Bulk crashes into Skull and then the ground, a comic-style “CRUNCH!” in gray lettering rises up from below and shakes a little, before falling back down off-screen.

Bulk stares happily in to the distance as Skull squeezes a bottle of sun tan lotion too hard, expelling all of its contents all over Bulk’s face and upper body.

Reversion: A comic-style “sploosh!” in white lettering in a black bubble starburst grows and shrinks away over the middle of the screen.

During his audition, long shot of Bulk repeatedly punching at the air while spinning around in a circle, then preparing to do a spin kick.

Reversion: Puffs of smoke shoot out of Bulk’s fists as he punches.

During his audition, close on Bulk as he completes a spin in mid-air, poses happily after landing, and then moving arms about before taking a step forward.

Reversion: Seven curved, white streaks follow Bulk’s rotation.

During his audition, over-the-judges’s-shoulder shot as Bulk karate chops the table in front of the first judge, steps to his left and karate chops the table in front of the second judge, steps to his left and prepares to karate chop the table in front of the third judge, before thinking better of it and starts to turn back to the mat.

Reversion: As Bulk strikes the table each time, the frame shakes out-of- and then back in-to-place and a puff of dust kicks up from where the table was struck.

During his audition, long shot of Bulk again facing away from the judges, then picking up a pile of papers on a table to their right, then throwing it up into the air. Over-the-judges’s shoulder shot as Bulk punches at the pieces of paper as they fall through the air. Close on the middle judge as she puts hand to chest in astonishment. Closer on Bulk over the judges’s shoulders as he continues to punch at the papers, finally posing.

Reversion: Additional yellow, confetti-like debris falls from above along with the papers.

Zoom out from close on Tommy with arms crossed, reacting to what Bulk (off-screen) had said. The other five teens are at the beach, volleying a yellow volleyball to each other in a circle.

Original: First shot fades into second shot.

Reversion: Additional commercial break inserted. Before scene transition begins, a bumper focusing on the Green Ranger: a green energy beam flows across the screen, revealing a cut out Green Ranger in the lower right, a green energy splash reveals a shot of Green Ranger posing in a slanted frame. Reversion: Near the end of the shot, shot freezes with Scorpina cut out from the background which is now black with white streaks, purple magical dust, and a growing, white-cracked surface. Last eight frames cut. Runs an additional sixty frames.

Dragonzord Fighting Mode stabs golden-swirling Tail Staff into Babe Ruthless’s chest, first shooting energy into it to soften it up, then once impaled in him, causing him to surge with bluish electricity, before sparks burst out his back.

Reversion: A large, green energy orb emitting electricity is superimposed over the drill tip as Babe Ruthless is impaled, obscuring all but the top of its head.

Reversion: Near the end of the shot, the Rangers are cut out from the background, which is now filled with a pink-and-white texture on black. A stylized black-and-white “tribal coin” shape slides in from the bottom and sits behind the Rangers as they rotate toward the camera. Last four frames cut. Runs an additional sixty frames.

Zoom in to a group of edited frames largely focusing on Tommy. Pan up and right to a group of edited frames largely focusing on Billy. Reversion: End credits continue running over bottom half of frame. After freeze frame, each teen is slowly outlined by Ranger-colored beams (Zack’s is white) as the background fades away and the rest of the foreground fades to black-and-white. Tommy drops off-screen behind the others before reemerging in karate gear, sliding in from lower left and punching toward camera.
