2021 Power Rangers Survey

Hasbro’s Lightning Collection

From time to time, GrnRngr.com asks fans across the world to take surveys to gauge current fandom interest in various subject areas. All data is collected anonymously and overall results are shared with the online Power Rangers community once the surveys are completed.

Do you collect Lightning Collection figures?

Answer % of Votes
Yes, all of them 38%
Yes, specific favorite teams 31%
Yes, specific favorite characters 29%
No 2%

What is your one favorite Lightning Collection figure released so far?

With over sixty different figures to choose from, answers spanned the entire gamut - from the very first wave released to figures currently trickling out as part of wave 9.

  1. The most frequent response - given by 6.1% of respondents - is Tommy himself, the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger.
  2. Close behind in second place is, surprisingly, inarguably the most problematic release so far, Dino Thunder White Ranger - the choice of 5.5% of respondents.
  3. Third place goes to a figure from wave three, Mighty Morphin Drakkon with 5.1%.
  4. Rounding out the top five are two more early figures - wave two’s Lost Galaxy Magna Defender (4.7%) and wave one’s S.P.D. Shadow Ranger (4.5%).

Results are weighted based on individual rankings. A “perfect score” would be achieved if every respondent who would purchase any Lightning Collection figure ranked a given series #1.

Have you purchased any previously released Lightning Collection figures of recurring villains (i.e. Rita, Zedd, Goldar, Astronema, etc.)?

Answer % of Votes

Are you interested in purchasing Lightning Collection figures of additional recurring villains in the future?

Answer % of Votes

No 12%

What is the one recurring villain at the top of your must-have list?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing figures of recurring villains in the future.

96% of respondents who answered Yes to the previous question provided an answer to this one.

  1. 16% of respondents feel that Astronema needs her primary lieutenant and named Power Rangers in Space’s Ecliptor.
  2. Over 11% of respondents want to continue working through the collection of creatures from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and selected Rito Revolto.
  3. Power Rangers Time Force’s Ransik was chosen by 4.3% of respondents whereas Power Rangers Turbo’s Divatox and Power Rangers Mystic Force’s Koragg tied, both being named by just over 4% each.

What is the one “monster of the week” at the top of your must-have list?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing figures of “monster of the week” in the future.

84% of respondents who answered Yes to the previous question provided an answer to this one.

With literally hundreds of possible answers, it likely won’t come as a surprise that the majority of monsters named were named only once or twice. That said, it is notable (and arguably unsurprisingly so) that no non-Mighty Morphin monster was named by more than 1% of participants

Named by just under 12% of particpants, Pudgy Pig easily takes the top prize. Runners-up include GrnRngr.com monster mascot Eye Guy (5.8%) and fellow season one monster du jour Knasty Knight (4.1%).

Have you purchased multiples of any previously released Lightning Collection “disposable baddies” (i.e. “army building”)?

What is the one “disposable baddie” at the top of your must-have list?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing figures of recurring villains in the future.

88% of respondents who answered Yes to the previous question provided an answer to this one.

  1. Just under 25% of respondents want to continue the current release pattern, hoping the fourth disposable baddie released is from the fourth season - Power Rangers Zeo’s Cogs.
  2. On the other hand, almost 22% of respondents want to jump ahead to a perennial fan favorite whose grunts have never been released in toy form - Power Ranger in Space’s Quantrons.
  3. The next three most popular were chosen by roughly 4% of respondents each - Power Rangers Turbo’s Piranhatrons (also never released in toy form), Power Rangers Time Force’s Cyclobots, and Power Rangers S.P.D.’s Krybots.

Are you interested in purchasing Lightning Collection figures of Bulk & Skull?

Answer % of Votes
Yes 64%
No 36%

Which single version of Bulk & Skull would you be most interested in purchasing?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing figures of Bulk & Skull.

In an attempt to not influence the responses by giving possible choices, the wording of this question left some participants confused. The intent was not to imply that either member of the original comedic pair should get release-priority over the other or that anything other than a two-pack would even be sensible. The hope was to see if there was a specific, unexpected appearance that warranted selection for potential figures.

  1. Over 40% of responses singled out Bulk & Skull’s appearance during Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season one. Some specified “Day of the Dumpster” or “season one” specifically while others used any number of terms that clearly elicit that appearance (“bullies”, “punks”, “bikers”, “leather jacket”, “red beret”, etc.). Suffice to say, it is clear that this is the desired potential appearance of Farkas and Eugene.
  2. Over 16% of respondents noted Boom! Comics’ versions of the duo, this time as their alter egos the Orange and Purple Rangers.
  3. While the other responses all appeared less than 5% of the time, the number three response was quite literally any version (4.9%).

Other honorable mentions include the pair’s iconic apperances from the episodes “Doomsday”, “Countdown to Destruction”, and “Forever Red”.

Would you be interested in purchasing that accessory add-on pack with the caveat that it would be packaged with a somehow modified figure that had already been released (i.e. a repaint)? (Hasbro has recently experimented with this approach with a couple Transformers releases.)

Answer % of Votes
Yes 53%
No 47%

What is the one Megazord you most want to see in figure form?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing figures of Megazords.

With almost three decades worth of Megazords to choose from, the variety of answers was large. However, it likely comes as no surprise that the most popular response was the (Dino) Megazord from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season one (15.6%).

Rounding out the top three are season two’s Thunder Megazord (5.8%) and Power Rangers in Space’s Astro Megazord (5.6%).

Are you interested in purchasing Lightning Collection Megazords in a “deluxe” scale?

Answer % of Votes
Yes 72%
No 28%

What is the one Megazord you most want to see in a “deluxe” scale?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing “deluxe” Megazords.

Only a single vote separated the top two answers to this one and neither should be a surprise given previous results. With just under 11% of the vote each, Mighty Morphin’s (Dino) Megazord just barely edges out In Space’s Astro Megazord.

Rounding out the top three is the one that the transfer of the master toy license left fans wanting - Mighty Morphin’s Shogun Megazord (9.4%).

Did you purchase Hasbro’s 12” Zeo Megazord (E8164)?

Answer % of Votes

No, but I like it 38%
Yes 15%

Of all the possibilities, what is the one character you most want to see released in figure-form as part of the Lightning Collection?

With a seemingly endless number of possible characters to select from, four individuals managed to each be named by over 5% of respondents.

  1. 7.1% of people combined to make a non-Ranger the top vote-getter in this category - the great sage, Ninjor.
  2. Next up, with 6.9% and 6.3% of the vote respectively, are two turn-of-the-century Rangers - Time Force’s Quantum Ranger and Lightspeed Rescue’s Titanium Ranger.
  3. Last but not least, fans don’t care about who may or may not own the rights - 5.8% of respondents named Ivan Ooze as their most wanted.

Are there any other items you’d like to see released as part of the Lightning Collection?

The final open-ended question where some people list one general category and others list every item they could ever dream of. Some popular themes included:

  1. 34% of respondents mentioned something roleplay-related, with 21% mentioning morphers, and more often than not “all morphers” or “any morphers” rather than a specific one. 15% indicated weapons-and-the-like, while 8% mentioned replica helmets.
  2. 13% of respondents called for Megazords, often specifically mentioning combinable versions.
  3. Finally, 13% of respondents specifically called for more villains, whether they were specific big-bads, memorable generals, or popular monsters.

Addendum

Given the interest in the results of the question on series above, a deeper dive into the data seems warranted, specifically regarding some fans’ belief that there is too much focus on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

First, some high-level notes:

  • From above, 60.4% of respondents expressed interest in purchasing future Lightning Collection figures from MMPR, which is roughly 3-in-every-5 respondents.
  • Less than 1% of respondents who expressed interest in purchasing future Lightning Collection figures from MMPR selected only MMPR.
  • 10.4% of fans selected every season and roughly a third of them also selected “Other”.
  • The average respondent selected just over 12 series. The median number of series was 10.

What follows is a breakdown of how fans who are interested in purchasing Lightning Collection figures from one series feel about other series. The top three most often selected series amongst fans of each series is listed, plus MMPR when necessary.
