2023 Power Rangers Survey

Hasbro’s Lightning Collection

From time to time, GrnRngr.com asks fans across the world to take surveys to gauge current fandom interest in various subject areas. All data is collected anonymously and overall results are shared with the online Power Rangers community once the surveys are completed.

Do you collect Lightning Collection figures?

As a collector who collects specific favorite teams, what is your preference for how to handle improvements/advancements in Lightning Collection figure articulation (i.e. new neck joint, pinless technology, etc.) for Ranger teams that have already been partially released?

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they collect Lightning Collection figures from specific favorite teams.

Answer % of Votes
Consistency - future Rangers of in-progress teams should use the existing base figure 49%
Advancements - future Rangers of in-progress teams should use the new base figure 30%
No preference 21%

What is your one favorite Lightning Collection figure released so far?

With over 140 different figures to choose from, answers spanned the entire gamut - from the very first wave released to figures currently on shelves as part of wave 13.

  1. The most frequent response - given by 6.5% of respondents - was the impeccable Mighty Morphin Finster, which also remains the #1 favorite amongst collectors on LightningCollectors.com  (off-site link).
  2. For the second year in a row, second place belongs to a Power Rangers Turbo figure released within the six months - Turbo Blue Senturion, chosen by 5.5% of respondents.
  3. Rounding out the top four were a couple figures that elicited some less-than-positive responses when originally released, Wave 7’s Mighty Morphin Green Ranger (4.9%) and the Walgreen’s-exclusive Dino Thunder White Ranger (4.8%)

Of all the possibilities, what is the one character you most want to see released in figure-form as part of the Lightning Collection?

With a seemingly endless number of possible characters to select from, no single response was given by over 5% of respondents. However, the Top 3 spots belong to the same Top 3 from last year, albeit in a slightly different order.

  1. Last year’s runner-up moves up to #1, with 4.8% of respondents calling for a release of Time Force’s Quantum Ranger.
  2. Slipping to #2, but still increasing its overall percentage, Lightspeed Rescue’s Titanium Ranger (4.7%).
  3. The final slot in the top 3 goes to a technically invalid choice (as it’s not one character), but they are an inseparable duo - Bulk & Skull were named by 3.1% of those surveyed.

This question was only asked of those respondents who rated recent Lightning Collection figure releases as Fair, Poor, or Very Poor.

Note that many responses, due to their free form nature, sometimes fell into more than one of the below complaints.

  1. 22% of responses contained the word “paint”. Whether it’s a lack of paint applications or sloppy paint applications, “paint” once again topped the list.
  2. 20% of responses mentioned issues with “quality”, both in regards to quality control mishaps as well as just overall quality in general.
  3. 19% of respondents complained of the “joints” on the figures, specifically issues with the neck join (head-swapping) and the wobbliness of the new “drop-down” hips.

  2. Just over six-and-a-half percent of those surveyed named never-before-action-figured Darkonda while six percent named the previous season’s main antagonist, Divatox.
  3. Rounding out the top 5 were Ransik (returning to the top five after being knocked out last year) and Zen-Aku, both with roughly five percent.

This question was only asked of those respondents who reported that they would be interested in purchasing figures of “monster of the week” in the future.

84% of respondents who answered Yes to the previous question provided an answer to this one.

With literally hundreds of possible answers, it likely won’t come as a surprise that the majority of monsters named were named only once or twice. That said, it is notable that, once again, no single non-Mighty Morphin monster was named by more than 1.5% of participants.

  1. Named by just over 9% of participants, the only remaining monster who has placed in each of our annual surveys that still does not have a Lightning Collection figure - Knasty Knight.
  2. One of last year’s runners-up was named by just over 6% - Madame Woe.
  3. Bones (just under 6%) and Shellshock (just under 5%) round out the top four.

86% of respondents who answered Yes to the previous question provided an answer to this one.

  1. Placing first for the second year in a row, the Quantrons absolutely crushed the competition, being the choice of nearly 1 in 3 respondents. And, it should be noted, that this number would likely be even higher if those who merely answered “Power Rangers in Space” or the like clarified if they meant that season’s Quantrons or Craterites.
  2. Also standing pat at #2 from last year’s survey, the Piranhatrons (7%) remain unreleased as the streak of chronological foot soldiers was broken with the release of the Putrids.
  3. Rounding out the top four are the Krybots (overdue with the S.P.D. core team now complete) and the Cyclobots, both with over 5% of the vote.

Almost every grunt throughout the show’s history received at least one vote.

Have you purchased or are you planning to purchase any of the “Remastered” Mighty Morphin Lightning Collection figures?

Yes, because I missed out on or skipped the older ones 33%
No 27%

What is the one Lightning Collection figure you own (if any) that would most benefit from a “Remastered” release and what improvements do you think it needs?

  1. Time Force Red Ranger was the figure singled out the most, selected by over 7% of respondents.
  2. Perhaps unsurprising given the six figures Remastered so far, the original Lightning Collection figure - Mighty Morphin White Ranger - was named by 6.5%.
  3. Coming in at third place is perhaps the most infamous of the QC error poster children, Dino Thunder White Ranger (5.5%).

What factors might contribute to you purchasing a Lightning Collection figure for a character you already own?

  1. Mentioned by an astonishing 43% of those surveyed, accessories were easily the number one answer on this one. Users often mentioned the inclusion of all standard team weapon variants (e.g. all three Blade Blaster modes) as well as consistency of weapons across the whole team (e.g. Quasar Sabers/Quasar Launchers).
  2. Over 19% of respondents mentioned paint - more paint, consistent paint, correctly colored paint, properly applied paint - you get the idea.
  3. Over 18% of respondents called for different and/or improved portraits (or, as applicable, their proper inclusion in the first place).

  1. Nearly 12% of respondents agree with the webmaster and called for more bad guys, often citing specific seasonal “big bads” that may not have ever received toy representation previously.

What is the one thing you would like to see less of in the Lightning Collection?

79% of those who took the survey provided a response to this question.

  3. And 11% of respondents are tired of repaints/repacks/reissues, with many specifically expressing frustration (again) with MMPR oversaturation.

Are there any other items you’d like to see released as part of the Lightning Collection?

73% of those who took the survey provided a response to this question.

  1. Almost 23% expressed interest in seeing more collector’s grade morphers, with multiple people expressing confusion at the repeated color variants of the original Power Morpher.
  2. 19% of respondents want roleplay weapons, with many specifically awaiting potential releases of the Power Axe and Power Bow to complete the Power Blaster.
  3. And over 10% mentioned bad guys, with a clear preference for recurring villains over monsters du jour or cannon fodder.
